Breanna Slaughter-Eck

Death monsters strike again, this time in San Jose, California. *sigh*

Updated (and heart-wrenching) story here. The driver apparently turned left into the little girl.

More:

The scene of the collision is in the Rose Garden neighborhood, a nice residential area. Park Avenue is favored by cyclists. Any motorist who hits a cyclist — even a child who swerves left across traffic — is probably driving too fast for a residential street. If I recall correctly, the speed limit on Park on this stretch is something like 30 mph, but speeding and running stop signs is routine.

  5. The news report I saw last night also added that people in the neighborhood have been trying to get traffic calming measures for the street and/or no left turn signs at the school. So, what makes this even more tragic is that Breanna's death could have been avoided but might have been the result of city planning that prioritized car convenience over human safety.

  7. I'm kinda sick of reading about how bad people feel after they run somebody over.

If you buy a big-ass SUV, you *know* you're putting other people in danger.

  9. Fritz, three of those four stories about this crash start with 'child killed by SUV.' It's almost as if the vehicle had a will of its own. Shouldn't it be "SUV driver kills cyclist?" There's a human at the controls, a human whose actions caused the death of another human.

  15. Why do people are so close minded and only think about the victim? no one looks at the fact that the girl was not wearing a helmet, the fact that she lived far away from school and school provides buses for those who can't get a ride. Also, they provide free month passes for school kids. All you pricks are doing is being racist. If the driver was white you would not say shit. There re people out there raping, killing, stealing and god know what the hell else, then you come here to be racist? What the fuck is up with you guys? Yes it was very tragic that the little girl died but that does not mean that you could come here and be closed minded. Why don't you try to see the accident from the drivers point of view… by the way it was the little girls fault that she was killed.

  17. The poor victim was not legally allowed on the road as she had no drivers license, she had never taken a driving test. We do not even know if she knew how to drive.

A helmet would not have saved Breanna.

What would have saved Breanna was if this woman had obeyed the law and either gotten a license or NOT DRIVEN. and failing all of that, she could have at least checked the crosswalk near a school for children at school let out time.

I believe that it is one of the things they cover on the driving test this woman never took.

This poor victim is still on the road, and still has yet to pass a test proving she is capable of driving.

I guess I am just too narrow minded to understand why.

  19. to the person who said those terrible remarks about how the little girl should have been riding the bus. well they did'nt have that option because they were told that they were within the bus boundary lines. that still does'nt give the person the right to drag that little girl 40 to 50 ft. until she realized that breanna was in front of the vehicle. now her little sisters has to grow up without their big sister. also the parents has to live without their daughter. i guess the person who wrote that terrible comment about how breanna was in the wrong & she should have been wearing a helmet. well i guess you don't have a heart & also why don't you jump in the lake & stick it where the sun don't shine.

  23. Ilene, thank you for comment. I'm so sorry for the loss of your little sister. My daughter is just a little older than Breanna was and it still breaks my heart to hear about this senseless tragedy.

  25. What happened to my niece is devastating still to our entire family. The blame game will not bring Breanna back. However, we all have to be held accountable. I have no doubt that her intention that day was not to take Breanna's life, but she made many choices that day that could have prevented Breanna's death. No she didn't have her license, but ultimately, she clearly was not paying attention while she was driving. Te only way you hit someone and continue to drive, is when you never saw it coming. I truly believe she was not looking in the direction in front of her. Is she sorry, I am sure she is, but the right thing to do, whether intentional or not, is to take responsibility for the choices she made that day. God knows why she was taken so soon, He has a plan, whether we see it or not. No sentencing/punishment can bring Breanna back. The woman needs forgiveness from God only. Forgiveness from our family, is about healing, and may or may not come. Please, try to remember Breanna for the wonderful young lady she was, not by her death. PLease, to whoever is leaving messages about her in a negative light, saying she should have take the bus, how insensitive are you? I can respect another person's opinion, but you do not know the entire story, nor do you know Breanna I am sure, so if you want to say hurtful things, I suggest you say them to the mother and father who raised you to believe that this is how you show compassion to another human being. Thank you to everyone for your prayers, your support, and all your heartfelt messages. Breanna is now riding in paradise…..we love and miss you!
