Is there a way to know for sure how thick the ice is before one ventures there? I wonder whether if sections of the river/ice underneath the bridges are not as hard-iced as the others? Kinda cool but scary.

@Jack: I've lived in icefishing territory before. You drill to measure ice thickness.
But these guys probably just saw the other people playing on the ice and decided to go for it :-)
