Sacramento Grand Prix Women’s Criterium

The Sacramento Grand Prix took place around the Capitol building in Sacramento as a prelude to today’s Amgen Tour of California Stage 1 finish.

The winner of the one hour women’s criterium, Coryn Rivera for Team Peanut Butter and Company, is a 17 year old national champion with gold medals in Road, Track and Cyclocross. Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson, who himself was an athletic competitor, congratulates Coryn on her win.

San Jose Via Velo report

Happy Sunday, everybody!

Yesterday, San Jose held its first ever open streets event, Via Velo, when the city closed off about a mile of San Fernando Street across downtown. This modest street party inspired by other Ciclovia style street closings brought out a number of families with their bikes, along with information booths from the Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition, VTA, and the bike shops iMINUSD and Hyland Family Bicycles.

San Jose Bike Party came out in force, bringing their lively brand of energy to the soirée and organizing bike rides inducing newcomers to venture beyond the traffic-free Via Velo venue.

It had to happen, ladies and gentlemen: the marriage of two uniquely American bike cultures — Latter Day Saint missionaries on bikes and urban hipster fixies!

I and several others got a real kick seeing these LDS Elders riding urban fixed gear bikes in downtown San Jose during the Via Velo open streets event last Saturday.
