Happy Bike Stories

Lelas is one of the bike newbies I see on the bus nowadays. She told me that before two months ago, she never rode a bicycle anywhere, nor did she do much exercise. She picked up a second hand mountain bike for a commute and began riding the Highway 17 bus ‘over the hill’ from Santa Cruz to San Jose.

And she rode her bike the 10 miles to her work in Sunnyvale.

9 day, 60 mile traffic jam

Everybody’s talking about this epic traffic jam on the highway in to Beijing. This almost looks like something out of the Onion:

A nine-day traffic jam in China is now more than 100 kilometres long and could last for weeks, state media reported Monday.

At least some drivers have complained that roadside vendors have increased their prices to take advantage of the traffic jam. One truck driver said he bought instant noodles from one vendor for four times the original price.

Another driver, Wang, told Xinhua he’d been stuck in the traffic jam for three days and two nights.

Cüratorial Biomega: LDN & NYC

I’ll repost Biomega’s breathlessly enthüsiastic press release here for your education and enjoyment, but first the quick highlights on these chainless bikes: Laminated carbon fiber monocoque make up the frame of the LDN, which has a shaft drive, and reminds me of Trek’s 90s era “Y Frame” mountain bikes. The NYC has a more traditional aluminum diamond frame, with a flared out downtube to function as an integrated front fender / mudguard on this belt drive bike. No other product specs are available in the press material, but both bikes appear to have hub gears and disc brakes.
