Sunny and hot

TGIF. The weather is supposed to be sunny and hot along the coast this weekend, which means the Bay Area Air Quality Management District has declared a Spare the Air Day for Saturday because of expected high ozone levels. With this wonderful weather and dropping gasoline prices, we’ll see a lot of beach and boardwalk traffic. I plan to spend quality time with my family, and we’ll likely ride our bikes around town as well.

Jure Robic RIP

Bad news in the tight knit world of ultra endurance racers. Slovenian ultra cyclist Jure Robic was riding his bike in Plavški Rovt near Jesenice, Slovenia when he was hit by a car and killed . Local authorities say they’re investigating the crash.

More at Ultra Rob. Jure Robic has won the Race Across American five times, a record in the men’s solo category. He’s featured in Stephen Aurbach’s movie “Bicycle Dreams,” which follows the 2008 RAAM.

Las Vegas Critical Mass

Or something like a Critical Mass anyway, as 300 people rode their bikes down from the Sands Convention Center to the end of the Las Vegas Strip at Mandalay Bay where they did a U turn and did it again.

After the Thursday afternoon Interbike fashion show, Bike Hugger held their first Ignite Bikes presentation, which was something like a micro TED Conference for bike nerds. They had some heavy hitters who each spend about five minutes talking about bikes and related topics.
