First of all, a huge THANK YOU to Mark with the Orbea. He saved my life this morning. Okay, I exaggerate, but here’s the story.
The cheap Giant minipump I bought last November failed. I might dissect it later, but pumping the handle produces no pressure. I see a stranger roll onto Caltrain with an old Topeak frame pump (the one modeled after Zefal HP) strapped to the top tube of his new Orbea. The stranger (now known as Mark the Orbea guy) lets me use his pump. Thank you, Mark!

Thanks for promoting the contest….there's no way you look a day over 38. More than what a picture can say, it's the way that all of us cyclists carry ourselves and the attitude that comes with it. I think anyone who rides a bike is young at heart and only getting younger.

I have had nothing but trouble with pumps. This is why I keep a backup pump on me most of the time… generally a CO2 version so it's smaller.
My theory is that most people who bike don't bother to buy a pump. Of those who do, most of them are foofy wimps who park their bike in hooks on the garage and ride on rollers if it's raining.
I've been holding off writing a blog entry on bike pumps until I'm certain that I won't go back and want to rewrite it. But Lezynes seem to be good, so far.

I've had good luck with Zefal and Topeak frame pumps, as well as with the CO2 cartridges. I opened the Giant minipump — a tiny plastic piece broke apart inside the tube. The pump is worthless junk now.
What? Are you implying that I am a foofy wimp because I bought, and carry around, a compact bicycle pump? Or am I a wimp only if I buy a pump AND a set of rollers?
Does being un-wimpy require something like walking home? Taking the bus? Calling a significant other to come pick you up? Or fill up with disposable CO2 tanks, which seem to proliferate along popular cycle routes, for some strange reason?
