Cyclelicious 2.0

After five years of using Blogger I’m finally converting over to WordPress.  I believe I have things more or less functional for now, though I’ll tweak things over the next couple of weeks.

I’m having difficulty migrating fives years of content from Blogger over to WordPress, but you can still view the old content here. There might be a handful of broken links and what not — if you run across any, please let me know in the comments here, by contacting me through this form, or via Twitter.

  1. I made the same move several years ago and haven't looked back. I think you'll find that you really like WordPress. I highly recommend the plug-ins, “Bad Behavior” and “Akismet” for spam control. They'll make your life much easier.

Keep up the good work, it's been a pleasure reading you all these years.

  2. That explains everything. Looks good, though with ad-block and so many scripts running I have no idea how it really looks.

  3. Well, the mobile them works, as I just chedk in on my phone, but I'm not sure is Disqus works, as I tried to comment from said phone and it's never posted…

One thing, in firefox a large portion of the top logo is no clickable, which is just a usability thing, but yeah…thought you might want to know.

  4. Thank you for the feedback, all; I really appreciate it. You're right, I like the admin and other features of WP a lot — I'm kicking myself for not making the switch years earlier. I was worried about the pain of change but it really wasn't too much effort (a couple of nights of work). Thanks also for the feedback on suggested plugins — I'll certainly look into whatever suggestions you have.

@Tony: I'm specifically interested in how it looks on mobile devices, so thanks for that. Bummed about the Disqus fail – I'm not quite sure what I think of Disqus yet, if I'll keep it or not.

  5. I agree with everyone that the new WordPress layout looks great. It is nice to be able to comment with Disqus as well. I have been playing around with WP for a few months…and I keep taking about making the move, but that transfer of all those old posts is the part that concerns me. I need to just go ahead and do it though. It is definitely a better platform than Blogger.

  6. You really should bite the bullet; I betcha you can have your blog moved over within a couple of hours, start to finish.

You should have an easier job at it than me. Importing from a Blogspot hosted blog is almost trivial. Mine was a bit more work because I'm already self hosted, I have all kinds of crazy PHP code in my template, and I have 5,000 posts and over 20,000 comments — about half of my old content was ported over with no problems, along with 3/4 of the comments.

You download the package, unzip it, move it all to your host, configure a MySql database, then run the install script. Day 2 for me was configuring the look and feel and then one more day to figure out how to import all the old blog posts.

  7. I didn't know about possible problems with mobile access.
I wonder if some mobile browsers block third-party cookie access – Disqus requires this to have users login.

  8. I think you should clean up your categories. Whereas Blogger/Blogspot had tags only to define posts, WordPress has both categories and tags. You can even get a plugin that hides certain tags from certain places (for example, I hide from the homepage posts tagged with “page2”).

  9. I've known it's possible, but self-hosted blogger to WP isn't really supported. There's a kluge but it didn't work with my content, so I had to figure out another kluge that mostly worked.

  10. What happened to the hubfinder tool? It gives a weird error message: Fatal error: Cannot redeclare class soapclient in /home/content/r/i/c/richardmasoner/html/hubfinder/nusoap.php on line 4104 What is that all about? http://www.cyclelicio.us/hubfinder/ hasn’t worked for a couple days now.
