Fashion and bicycles

Fashion websites attract a somewhat different demographic than Cyclelicious. The fashion portals are visited by young, college educated women with no children and some spending cash.

Cyclelicious readers are mostly male, “some college,” probably have children, and — except for the 3.5% of you who like the photos of pretty girls on bikes — most of you consider yourselves cyclists, avid cyclists, cycling enthusiasts. In other words, you like to ride bicycles. While fashionistas like clothes and shoes, avid cyclists such as yourselves like bikes, bike clothing, and bike shoes.

A fashion portal like Refinery 29 has 30 times the traffic of Cyclelicious, and most of their visitors don’t identify themselves as ‘cyclists’ so it’s always cool to see them feature stuff like Top 10 Fashionable Bikes For Men.

The $2,500 Acne-branded Bianchi Pista is pretty good for the snooty set, I think, but Refinery 29 also list a few bikes under $500 that fit the definition of bikes for the rest of us.

Check out this $500 bike from Kronan, for example. Like every Kronan bike, this bike comes with rear carrier, pump and pump holder, front drum brake, dynamo light, kick-stand, individual number plate, and a bell.

For the women, British fashion writer Alannah Sparks coordinated various outfits with designer bikes. She “tried to hop over the crossbar wearing a sprayed-on shift dress” but that attempt was less than flattering. And her “heels [and] skin-tight organza dress” while navigating busy London streets on a brakeless fixie sounded pretty exciting. Happily, Alanna also tried more practical bikes while staying well dressed, such as a wonderfully yellow Dutch style “sit up and beg” bike with step through frame and pretty baskets.
