Labor Day recovery

For the benefit of those outside of the United States, we had our token holiday honoring American socialist heroes this last weekend. I hope your Labor Day Holiday went better than mine. I spent much of it in bed recovering from a vicious sinus infection.

What little time away from the bed was spent enjoying the gorgeous California coast. Thanks to all of you who messaged, emailed and otherwise contacted me to let me know that the website was down over the weekend, but I was offline until Monday afternoon. My wife and I had a lovely, relaxed bike ride into Santa Cruz, where we enjoyed a long walk on the beach. I finally met Wade of Spokesman Bicycles; I also ran into Bennett (of the 42 Below ride fame) and saw him for the first time, I think, without his baseball socks.

K-Swiss is a California shoe company. To get that California vibe in their marketing, they hired the Japanese Kinfolk Bicycle Company to create images promoting K-Swiss’s “Malibu ’66” collection as a “celebration of California culture.” This California culture includes scruffy looking guys carrying notably non-scruffy Kinfolk tarck bikes. See more at Hypebeast. K-Swiss also sponsors a Triathlon team with Trek.

Competitors ride their penny farthing bikes and hobby horses for three hours in the Great Knutsford Race in northern England, which takes place once a decade. The winner is the individual or team who completes the most laps during those three hours. The photos in this post are from last weekend’s race.

Simon Singh and his quack lawsuit. “I believe it was Einstein who said that common sense is a set of prejudices we form by the age of 18,” says Singh, which probably explains a lot about our fears regaridng riding bikes in traffic. “Common sense,” for example, informs many people to ride as far right as possible and otherwise stay out of the way of those nasty automobiles.

Very cool bike ads!
