UCI Worlds 2010 crash: Bike breaks in two

17 year old Danish racer Julie Leth slides across the boards Friday at the UCI Track World Championship 33 laps into the women’s scratch race, taking out four other racers in the crash. American Shelley Evans’ bike snapped in half in the smashup.

In the painful video below, you can see US National Team cyclist Shelley Evans’s Fuji BMC track bike snap literally in half as the bicycle bounces over racers and their helmets. Evans, unfortunately, lost some teeth in the crash.

Amazingly, Leth hopped back on the bike to finish the race in 9th place out of the starting field of 24 racers. This rookie racer was happy to make the top 10. Pascale Jeuland of France placed first in the women’s scratch race. Julie Leth will next compete Sunday in the women’s points race.
