Bike helmets recalled due to head injury hazard

The US CPSC notice says “Bicycle Helmets Recalled by Bell Sports Due to Head Injury Hazard,” which is kind of funny.

Bell Sports of Scotts Valley, California has issued a voluntary recall for full face bicycle helmet because the chin strap buckle can fail. The hazard really isn’t in wearing the helmet, which is what the recall headline seems to imply for me, but because the helmet might fall off in the event of a crash. Bell says they’ve received one report of an incident where the buckle failed in a crash, resulting in an injury that required stitches below the wearer’s eye. Complete details here.

  1. Sounds suspicious, since all (not sure if this is still true) helmet manufactures use the same buckles as a self-protective measure. Not for the users. For the manufacturers.

  2. I thought it sounded funny too after looking at the buckle photo.  A single incident, and now a recall notice that I’m almost certain will be ignored by most consumers. If it happens again can this recall act as a Get Out of Jail Free card for Giro/Bell/Easton?
