Driver charged with killing cyclist flees to China

Hong Guo, the driver charged with felony vehicular manslaughter in the 2009 death of cyclist John Greaves, has apparently fled the country to avoid prosecution.

John Greaves was killed while cycling in Contra Costa County, California in June 2009. He was hit from behind by a Honda Civic driven by Hong Guo, then of Cupertino, California. Police say she was speeding well above the 30 MPH speed limit when she lost control of her car and struck Greaves and another, oncoming vehicle.

Guo, a Chinese national and legal U.S. resident, posted $50,000 bond and turned in her passport as ordered. Prosecutors later noticed the passport was long expired, suggesting that Guo planned to flee all along.

Greave’s widow, Danéil Greaves, is angry at Guo’s flight and says she’ll raise money to hire a bounty hunter. The Contra Costa attorney says Guo could have expected probation at the very worst, and her flight only makes things much worse. He is working with Federal authorities to locate Guo.

Possibly the saddest thing in this case: There were likely no serious consequences for driving recklessly enough to kill someone.
