Heartland Velo Show

On August 27 & 28 2011, the Alliant Energy Center in Madison, Wisconsin will house a weekend-long celebration of everything bicycle.

For over 100 years, the Midwest has been at the forefront of bicycle manufacturing, racing, and recreational riding. Artisans and manufacturers of bicycles and components, cycling accessories and apparel from both the east and west coasts and the Midwest have signed on to display their wares this summer in Madison.

Demonstrations, informative panels and seminars as well as parties and entertainment will create a “something for everyone” atmosphere for cyclists and non- cyclists alike. The Heartland Velo Show is designed to inspire aficionados, enthusiasts, casual riders and those who may just be curious about the fun, fitness and freedom to be found on two wheels.

Among the other seminars, Richard Schwinn will give a presentation on the the handbuilt Schwinn Paramount. “Richard Schwinn’s talks are always lively,” says Bina Bilenky, organizer of the Heartland Velo Show. “At the recent San Diego Custom Bicycle Show, so many people wanted to hear him speak that the crowd was spilling out into the hallway.” Schwinn runs Waterford Precision Bikes in Waterford, WI.

Other seminars include a bicycle building HOWTO, a “Framebuilders Family Tree” presented by Stephen Bilenky, tandem fit and design, empowering women cyclists, and the care and feeding of wool cycling apparel.

The Alliant Energy Center is only two miles from Madison’s downtown and the University of Wisconsin with easy access via the Capital City Trail. Cost to attend is $5 per day or $10 per day for a day pass and access to the seminars.

Bicycle tourism is an $800 million business in the state of Wisconsin. Bicycle powerhouse Trek Bicycles is located about 30 miles to the east in Waterloo. Planet Bike makes their home in Madison.
