New Zealand cyclists vs earthquake

Cyclists (triathletes actually, but they were riding bicycles) on a ride in a rocky canyon dodged huge boulders crashing all around them during the Christchurch earthquake. More here: Cyclists dodge rocky death!!!

Via Bev who editorializes with “Yikes!” and Greg.

My completely ludicrous earthquake preparedness plan involves biking and, where necessary, walking, running and bushwhacking back home over the Santa Cruz Mountains, with a detour through Morgan Hill, Gilroy and Watsonville if necessary. My co-workers make fun of the food stash in my office, but biking over earthquake destroyed roads takes a lot of energy. My dad knows something about that – he was among the very first responders to arrive after the 1995 Kobe quake when he and his team hauled relief supplies in by bike.

Fallback communication involves relaying messages through family in Colorado and Texas. We live about 200 yards from Hank. Hank’s a Santa Cruz County Amateur Radio Emergency Relay Service operator with a huge army surplus diesel generator that can provide power for his entire neighborhood for a couple of months, and he tests it monthly.

It is good to see it recognized that triathletes and cyclists are distinct, but overlapping species. 😉

  2. My emergency preparedness plan has just been rewritten to include sleeping in your garage. You wouldn’t shoot your old pal kit, wouldja? 😉

  4. @Kit: I didn’t mention this, but my plan includes resting at your place overnight 🙂 so you’re welcome to crash at my place anytime, my friend.

  5. Awesome! I took the Sunnyvale CERT class so I have a dorky looking hardhat and vest to wear in the event of an emergency, and I’ll probably be calling myself “The Incident Commander,” so be forewarned. 😉

Honestly though I need a better emergency preparedness kit. I have about 5 gallons of water plus whatevers in the water heater. Considering Jakki spoke to a girl last night who says her aunt has predicted all three of the most recent quakes and is predicting the next SF Bay Big One in March, maybe I should get on that.
