The AIDS LifeCycle — a 7 day, 600 mile charity ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles — began yesterday morning, where 2200 people rode their bikes to their first stop in Santa Cruz.
While roadies in full on road kit dominate, that large charity ride features all types of people in all types of costumes riding all types of bikes, which makes yesterday morning’s call about a “bike race” from Highway 92 into the California Highway Patrol a little more amusing than usual.

Then again, the belief that any large group of road users are participants in a ‘race’ might explain some of the behavior I regularly see from drivers on any given day.
Today, the AIDS LifeCycle ridres bike 109 miles along the Central Coast from Santa Cruz to King City.
2200 riders and nobody told CHP?
I’m sure the CHP knew about it ahead of time. The AIDS ride has been running the same weekend for at least 15 years. It’s just that most cops, like the general public, think that any organized bike ride is a race, not just a ride.
