Alviso salt pond bike tours

Levee Bike Tour of the Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge at Alviso Marina County Park

Nature in the middle of Silicon Valley.

Take a docent-led bicycle tour along the levees of the Don Edwards SF Bay Refuge. Learn about the Salt Pond Restoration Project and see Silicon Valley from a new angle. The trail is level and smooth, but unpaved, and it can be windy. The pace is moderate with stops. Helmet and water recommended. Recommended for ages 14 and over.

Tours are led by my colleague Stephen Dill and run from 10 AM to about noon-ish. The remaining tours are on these Saturdays – June 2, 16, 30; July 14, 28; and August 11, 25.

The tour starts and ends at the Alviso Marina County Park, which you can find by going to the very northern end of 1st Street where it deadends into the railroad tracks in Avlviso, walking over the tracks, and continuing on Taylor Street until it deadends at the Bay. Theoretically, you could also bike the Guadalupe River Trail north all the way to Alviso, but this trail will close Real Soon Now for construction. The nearest VTA light rail station is at Tasman Drive, but that’s about two and a half miles from the park. VTA #58 serves Alviso, but that bus doesn’t run on weekends.

Biking on the levees at the very south of the South Bay is pretty cool. It’s absolutely flat (as in there are no hills) and I’ve ridden on the levees on regular road bikes and fixed gear, but some people might be more comfortable on bikes with slightly wider tires if you’ve got that. And when they say it’s windy, they ain’t kidding.
