Bicycle proximity siren when cars are too close

The IDEO design house invited makers, hackers, designers and “OpenIDEOers” to their London design studio for an IDEO Make-a-thon. Among the creations were a couple of ideas to help cyclists.

This “Bikewell” safety light is a proximity alarm that notifies motorists with a frowny face and a siren when he gets too close to the bike.

This is obviously a prototype proof of concept, of course. The real version would have a much more visible signal, as well as a siren noise loud enough to penetrate the encroaching car’s cage, because loud startling siren noises on our saddle is something every cyclist desires.

  1. It’s a good concept, but I think the frowny face is a too subtle to make a driver move left.  Maybe it should be hooked up to an actuator that pushes a flag out horizontally 3 feet.
