Cycling: Safer than you think

Biking In LA digs a little deeper into the Los Angeles Times claim that Los Angeles is one of the most dangerous places to ride a bike in the United States.

Since we’re there, let’s also look at the 2011 American Community Survey Numbers for Los Angeles.

  • City of Los Angeles bike commuters: 1.0 ±0.2%. That’s over 17,000 cyclists, of whom an estimated 13,000 are men, and 4,000 are women.
  • Los Angeles County bike commuters: 0.8 ±0.1%. 34,000 cyclists countywide. 24,000 men and 10,000 women.

  1. My guess — and it’s only that — is the counts for Los Angeles City and County severely undercounts the number of bike commuters in the area by missing Los Invisibles. There is a very large number of Hispanic immigrants who rely on bikes for their primary form of transportation, but may not show up on traditional bike counts or surveys.
