Informational HOWTO video explains how to use the green bike boxes in Edmonton, SK AB.
Given the confusion that’s often expressed here about right turns, we need a similar video for San Jose’s new buffered bike lanes.
Edmonton is actually in Alberta, not Saskatchewan.
I don’t really get the point of bike boxes. It seems like a formalized queue jump system that will inspire more resentment and confusion than understanding or goodwill… the video is a great idea if it gets widely shared or broadcast, because although I am an avid bicycle commuter there are none in my city and I was unsure of how they worked too.
Seems to make more sense on a T shaped intersection like the one pictured.
“Given the confusion…” If the design is confusing, maybe it should be redesigned?
I knew that. I was just testing to see if you were paying attention. Yeah, that’s the ticket!
Seriously, though: thank you. I will edit.
Bikes overtaking stationary cars is as much “queue jumping” as cars overtaking moving bikes. All traffic is a queue, whether it’s moving or not.
