Felony charges against Chicago cop who hit cyclist with truck

Early on the morning of August 3, 2012, two cyclists were riding together in Humboldt Park, Chicago, IL when Chicago police officer Michael Bergeson struck the female cyclist with his F150 pickup truck, seriously injuring her.

Mr. Bergeson allegedly called 911 then fled the scene as the ambulance approached, striking two parked cars as he did so, according to The Tribune. His vehicle’s license plate was retrieved at the scene. Two days after the crash, he allegedly made a false traffic report blaming the bicyclist for causing the crash.

The officer claimed the cyclist ran a stop sign when he hit her. More at the Chicago Bike Advocate: Chicago Police Officer Charged With Felony For Striking, Seriously Injuring Bicyclist Then Lying About It. The Tribune and the Sun Times fill in some additional details.

Well done to those who investigated this crime instead of just brushing it off as yet another “it must have been the cyclist’s fault” collision. Points to Officer Bergeson who at least called 911 so the poor girl could get medical attention.
