Today is the anniversary of the first parking meter

The world’s first parking meter was installed on this day in 1935 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

First parking meter July 16 1935

Carl C. Maggee filed his patent for the “Nickel Meter” in May 13, 1935. The first meters came into use on July 16, 1935 at the corner of First Street and Robinson Avenue in downtown Oklahoma City. Cyclists began locking their bikes to these sturdy posts soon afterwards.

Now, we’re losing bike parking spots as cities replace individual meters with central pay stations and numbered parking spots. Fie!
