Mountain lions in Santa Cruz

Two hikers spotted a pair of full grown mountain lions near the upper meadows of Pogonip Park near the Spring Street entrance in Santa Cruz, California, this evening, according to the Santa Cruz police. The two hikers were not injured and it appeared that the two mountain lions were interested in their off-leash dog.

The police say residents should take precautions with outside animals and children. Do not hike or bike alone and take a cell phone with you. If you are confronted by a mountain lion, do not try to run away, face the animal, appear as big as possible, make loud noises, and report the incident to the Santa Cruz Police Dept or Fish and Game. Do not take your dog into the park off leash.
