Redwood City bike share kiosks

Redwood City is the lone San Mateo County location for the Bay Area bike share experiment slated to open for business on July 1, 2012.

The San Francisco Bay Area Air Quality Management District (BAAQMD, whew) is funding a bike share pilot for the Caltrain corridor. BAAQMD are partnering with the city of San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA), San Mateo County Transportation Authority (SamTrans), Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA), and Caltrain. A vendor will be chosen in April with a grand opening of the program, which will have 1,000 bikes at 100 kisks, scheduled for July 1, 2012.

San Francisco and San Jose planning officials emphasized transportation, tourism and employment for their bike share kiosk locations. Redwood City has that as well, with a large number of bike share kiosks clustered near the Redwood City Caltrain Station and transit center, through downtown at parking locations, and at Kaiser Permanente Hospital (Redwood City’s 5th largest employer after Oracle, San Mateo County, Electronic Arts, and Sequoia Hospital). But take a look at this map for other bike share locations.

The city wants to locate bike share kiosks at schools, parks, and solidly residential areas, perhaps with the idea that teens might take advantage of these methods of mobility?

It’s an interesting move, but I don’t know if minors can participate in bike share. California mandates helmet use for children on bikes under 18 years old and most bike share programs don’t include helmets. But if the bike program can overcome these small hurdles, will youth culture be a little more willing to embrace non-car transportation?

  1. This is awesome.  I have reason to visit my companies office in Redwood City and it is only 1.5 miles from the Caltrain station.  I can easily do this sans car.
