Santa Cruz to experiment with open streets

After much wheedling from Saskia Lucas, the city of Santa Cruz, California agreed to close a two mile stretch West Cliff Drive from Lighthouse Field to Natural Bridges for this city’s first ever official open streets event.

Santa Cruz Open Streets takes place on Sunday, October 7, 2012. West Cliff will be closed to auto traffic and open for play.

Although much of the media and promotion of Santa Cruz Open Streets seems to focus on the joy of cycling on this gorgeous stretch of road, you don’t need to be a Santa Cruz bike hippie to enjoy this event. Participants in this free activity can hula hoop, skate, climb a portable climbing wall, watch and listen to Watsonville Taiko drummers, hopscotch down the middle of the road, or whatever.

Karen Kefauver writes about some of the background and the people involved who made it happen.
