5 Boro Bike Tour bans hydration packs, backpacks

Bike New York, organizers of the popular Five Boro Bike Tour in New York City, yesterday announced several security measures in response to the Boston bombings.

From CBS New York:

In the wake of the Boston bombings, the [Bike New York] has banned backpacks, hydration packs, saddlebags, and any other large bags for the 40-mile ride on May 5.

Checkpoints along the route will be set up to ensure compliance, and confiscated items will not be returned.

The event draws more than 32,000 bike riders, who will only be able to use small fanny packs, water bottles and bike frame bags.

  1. Can’t they just ban back & hydration packs for anyone who has been specifically named as a terrorist threat by a foreign or other intelligence source? To make all of us pay for the inability of our own security infrastructure to properly monitor such obvious threats is quite discouraging. By punishing the rest of us, our security services only reminds us of this dereliction.

  2. Sounds prudent actually.

…and since cars can pack like a metric fuck-ton of explosives in their trunk, hopefully they’ll be banned from coming on to the island of Manhattan on days when people might be endangered (i.e., 365.25 days each year).

    Can I get an Amen?
