Philippe Gaumont R.I.P.

Olympic medalist and confessed doper Philippe Gaumont passed today at age 40 after three weeks in a coma.

The former road cycling pro suffered a heart attack on April 23 and never recovered.

The Frenchman became pro in 1994. In 1996, he tested positive for anabolic steroids twice. During his time with Cofidis after 1997, he tested positive for amphetamines and again for steroids. In 2004, he confessed to widespread drug use in the pro peloton, implicating his teammate David Millar. He wrote a tell-all book, Prisonnier du dopage, in which he explains in detail how cyclists cheat drug tests.

Gaumont retired from professional racing in 2004 and became the owner of a bar. He leaves behind a wife and three children.

  1. Very sad to read that Philippe did not wake up from his heart attack.
Someone that told the truth and was vilified for it.
I hope Millar bears this in mind today in Italy.

    RIP Philippe.
