Zero Waste SJBP & public bike repair stands for downtown San Jose

San Jose Bike Party will celebrate its 6th Anniversary Friday night with a Day of the Dead ride, October 18, 2013. The new Raven Bikes will be introduced at this ride along with an initiative to transform Bike Party into a Zero Waste event, funding for downtown bike repair stations, and a new strategy to reduce the impact the popular ride has on neighborhoods and traffic.

San Jose Bike Party Day of the Dead ride 2013

Multiple Start Points

The month’s ride will depart from three start locations: West San Jose from the parking lot north of Winchester Mystery House; East San Jose at the Target store Capital Square Mall, N. Capitol Ave. and Mckee Rd.; and South San Jose from Cathedral of Faith Church at Curtner Ave. just west of Highway 87.

The three routes will pass cemeteries and other key San Jose landmarks. The full route, as always, will be available 24 hours before the ride at www.sjbikeparty.org. Riders are welcome to choose a start location that allows them to ride to the start or join or leave at any point along the way. Three different starting locations will encourage riders ride to the start rather than drive; reducing auto traffic and parking demand. As always SJBP encourages riders to review our “How We Ride” guide.

Recycling and trash collection bikes

San Jose Bike Party Ravens will celebrate the ride’s sixth anniversary with a $36,000 fleet of eight, Dutch-designed trash collection bikes imported from Work Cycles Cargo Bikes in the Netherlands.

These bikes provided by UBSJ and highlighted in the familiar San Jose teal and black will be used as part of San Jose Bike Party’s Zero Waste initiative as well as other community events. These bikes not only have custom built hardware to accommodate San Jose City garbage and recycling bins, but also include tools for minor bike and tire repairs, as well as first aid kits.

Dero Fix Public Bike repair stand

Proceeds from the redemption of recyclables will be matched by a local business and be used to purchase publicly accessible repair stands in downtown San Jose, such as the Dero Fix It stand show to the right. UBSJ has already seeded money for the first install and are negotiating with the city for a location near Caltrain Diridon Station to install this public bike repair stand.

SJBP website is currently jammed up, find mirror of route maps at UBSJ.org.
