Transportation directors named for NYC, Chicago

New transportation directors have been named for America’s largest city and America’s Second City.

Mayor-elect Bill de Blasio named Polly Trottenberg to replace Janette Sadik-Khan as New York City’s Transportation Commissioner. Trottenberg, who currently serves as Under Secretary for Policy at the U.S. Department of Transportation, said she is “committed to expanding the use of bikes.” Trottenberg says her mandate from de Blasio is to increase transit and bicycling for transportation and to reduce traffic fatalities. Transportation Alternatives describes her as a said she is“>demonstrated leader in progressive transportation. Bike Portland profiled Trottenberg’s role at US DOT in 2011.

In Chicago, Mayor Rahm Emmanuel announced the appointment of Rebekah Scheinfeld as Commissioner of the Chicago Department of Transportation. Scheinfeld replaces Gabe Klein, who resigned from the agency in November. Although she has promoted transit as her role of Chief Planning Officer at the Chicago Transit Authority, her views on cycling are unknown.

  1. I lived in Manhattan until November and now live across the river in Jersey City. In the greater NYC area, bicycles are gaining traction. Citibikes are recent but look popular and growing. There is still a long way to go but community groups are in place to drive expansion of bike paths, etc. and there are a huge number of meetups for area riding. Any clever city politician would ride this wave
