On June 24, 2014, at about 5:00PM, Deputies from the Marin County Sheriff’s Office Problem Oriented Policing Unit, along with Detectives from the Marin County Major Crimes Task Force and San Rafael Police Department’s Street Crimes Unit executed several search warrants within Marin County in regards to a major bicycle theft ring. The search warrants were served at a residence in the 1100 block of Sir Francis Drake Blvd, Kentfield, a storage facility on Industrial Way, Greenbrae, and a motorhome in Corte Madera. Rebecca Hammett, a 50 year old woman who resides in Kentfield, had been buying suspected stolen bicycles from various bicycle thieves in Marin. Hammett was arrested and booked into the Marin County Jail.

To help with recovery, the Sheriff’s deputies took photos of all of the bikes. The bikes and frames range from steel Japanese frames to newer models. I saw a Cannondale that appears to be new, out of the box and never assembled, and several other frames seem to be prepped for shipping for online purchase.

The Sheriff’s office said they’ve been able to match an owner to only a single bicycle. The victim, whose bicycle was stolen from Sir Francis Drake High School earlier this month, reported the theft and provided the bicycle’s serial number.

The Marin County Sheriff’s Office has a Bicycle Registry Program aimed at creating a database of bicycles so that in the event of loss or theft, the likelihood of recovery will increase. The Bicycle Registry Program is a free service that allows law enforcement officers to quickly retrieve identifying information and photos of stolen or lost bicycles thereby increasing the likelihood of recovery.

To add your bicycle to the Marin County Sheriff’s Office Bicycle Registry, register online at MarinSheriff.org under the RESOURCES tab.
