Whole lotta biking going on

Happy National Bike Week in the USA and the San Francisco Bay Area.

Ken Yeager & Nuria Fernandez

I was talking with a friend yesterday and discovered it can be hard to follow what’s going on. Here are some choices for you in the SF Bay Area this week.

TODAY

Amgen Tour of California Stage 3 starts and finishes in the city of San Jose, CA today. Start happens on Berryessa Road at 10:45; finish happens sometime between 3 PM and 4 PM at the County Motorcycle Park out on Metcalf Road in the south part of San Jose. Great viewing can be found on Mount Hamilton at Lick Observatory, too; expect the leaders to pass the summit anytime between 1:40 PM and 2:30 PM. See Stage 3 details here.

In San Francisco, check out the Fell & Oak Protected Bike Lanes Celebration at noon.

Mountain View residents, workers and students can attend the free intro to urban bicycling workshop taught by LCI Winona Hubbard. RSVP required and space is limited.

Learn how to protect your bike from theft at the bike theft prevention workshop in Oakland.

WEDNESDAY

Free day for you while the rest of us pack swag bags and cook up a delicious breakfast for Bike To Work Day on Thursday.

Feel free also to join up with San Jose BikePool from Almaden to Downtown San Jose starting at 7:30 AM, and the return ride from City Hall beginning at 5:30 PM.

In San Francisco, learn about better biking at your company.

THURSDAY – BIKE TO WORK DAY

Bike To Work Day Mountain View Energizer Station

There are more events than you can shake a stick at. Here are couple of South Bay suggestions:

  • Join VTA Bike Train for a Thursday morning ride along the Guadalupe River Trail from downtown San Jose to the VTA offices on North 1st Street beginning at 7:30 AM.
  • How many Energizer Stations can you hit Thursday morning before they shut down around 9 AM? Be sure to stop by the Energizer Station at my office on Agnew Road at Garrity in Santa Clara, CA.

Bike Away from Work Bash 2015

  • Silicon Valley’s Bike Away From Work Bash takes place at the Roosevelt Center in San Jose’s east side.

FRIDAY

R2D2 Cargo Bike

San Jose Bike Party takes place Friday night with a Star Wars theme.

SATURDAY

Maker Faire at the San Mateo County Fairgrounds.

  1. There will be a petition circulated soon regarding the STACT closures so please keep your eyes open, if this is a public resource you feel is worth protecting access to. Although the weather forecast isn’t great, we’ll be doing our annual bike counts at the Agnew intersection on the trail, so please stop by and help us ‘make it count’. Last year approximately 430 bicyclists passed through there while the trail was closed for construction. This year it will be open, and as far as I’m concerned the public needs to hear that that’s over 400 single-occupancy cars removed from congesting our local highways.
