Higher coverage, easier claims for Kryptonite Anti-Theft program

Kryptonite announced longer coverage, higher limits, and web-based registration and claims for their Anti-Theft Protection Offer (ATPO) program today. Kryptonite designs and sells security products for bicycles and motorsports.

The ATPO is an optional offer now available for up to five years of coverage on certain u-locks and chains. Before today, Kryptonite’s maximum coverage was three years.

The ATPO offers registered customers reimbursement up to a specific monetary amount, in the event their bike are stolen due to the unintended opening or breaking of the lock by force.

Coverage amounts range now range from $500 for a moderate security lock (5/10) to $5,000 for their top-of-the-line security locks, increasing their payout limits by $500 to $5000 on the New York Fahgettaboudit Mini U Lock, and by $750 to $3000 for the Evolution series 4 U-Lock.

Kryptonite also announced streamlined online registration and claims. Previously, this was a paper-based process. The new online registration process includes more information about the ATPO service so a rider is well informed in terms of how ATPO works. Registration is required, and additional payment may be required for certain protection levels.

Kryptonite also announced coverage is available in 30 countries around the world, including 24 in Europe.

For details, visit Kryptonite’s ATPO registration page. ATPO details are also available on product packaging. Cables and accessories are not covered by ATPO, and Kryptonite requires evidence of theft insurance deductible, a police report, and a photo of your damaged lock before payout. I’ve heard claims are routinely denied because the lock was taken or discarded.

In over 20 years of using Kryptonite U-locks, I’ve yet to lose a bike to theft when it’s locked with a Kryptonite lock in San Francisco, San Jose, Santa Cruz, Palo Alto, and elsewhere. These days, my primary locks are a pair of Evolution 4 mini u-locks, which I think provide a good balance between weight, ease-of-use and security for this area. As with all things, your mileage may vary.
