SF South Bay: Bike meetings tonight, and more

Here are opportunities for you to speak up as a cyclist at various Santa Clara County meetings tonight (Tuesday, January 25, 2017). Thank you for your help and participation.

Los Gatos Creek Trail flooding

The San Jose Team meeting happens tonight at the Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition office in downtown San Jose. Meeting begins 6:30 P.M. You can bring your bicycle inside. We’ll discussion the developing Complete Streets policy at VTA, talk strategy for funding Viva CalleSJ, talk about how to check Union Pacific to fix the lousy track crossing on 10th Street, and get a fresh in-person update from John Brazil of the City’s Department of Transportation. The San Jose Team Meeting is a great opportunity to network with some of the people making things happen (or not as the case may be) in the South Bay.

City of Cupertino Bike Plan Review and Open House, January 25 @ 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm. You can also see the proposal for a a Class IV – separated – bike lanes on Stevens Creek Boulevard from Foothill Blvd to Tantau Ave.

Mountain View BPAC meets tonight to discuss El Monte Ave pedestrian improvements and talk about recent VTA BPAC activities. They also vote on a new chair and will welcome new members (which includes my colleague Valerie).

Next month: Sunnyvale city council will discuss plans for the Mary Avenue crossing over 101 and 237 the evening of February 28, 2017. Four configurations are proposed: Four travel lanes plus bike lanes; Two travel lanes plus enhanced bike lanes; Bike/ped only bridge; and Bike/ped plus shuttles. The study session starts at 5:00pm, two hours before the regular council meeting. Agenda and other details should be available on the city legislative calendar next month.

Road Closures

I see several of you out on the road again now that the sun has come out. Several roads in the Santa Cruz Mountains remain closed due to storm damage. Even those not on the road closure list have huge new potholes; I was nearly swallowed by a monstrous, water-filled pit on El Rancho Drive during this morning’s ride.

Roads that remain closed or with traffic controls in the Santa Cruz Mountains include portions of Bear Creek Road, Eureka Canyon, Glenwood Drive, Rodeo Gulch, Soquel San Jose, Swanton Road, and Upper Zayante in Santa Cruz County. Mountain Charlie — which is my main route from home to San Jose — isn’t on the closure list but I heard part of that has slid out too.

In Santa Clara County, portions of Black Road, Redwood Gulch Road, and Gist Road in the Santa Cruz Mountains are closed. Soda Springs Road behind Lexington Reservoir is down to a single lane due to pavement failure. Mount Hamilton Road is also closed today due to snow, but I wonder how far you can get up on a bike past the road closure?
