I wonder if I can find the 90210 episode where I spotted a nameless classmate riding to class on his fixed gear or single-speed bike. Interesting... Russell Crowe takes the lane Crowe rides a very nice top of the line off road Scott. . It was not the gossip writer/rider's first bike ride. But she admitted she didn't ride much, unlike the movie star, who rides for fun and fitness wherever he is, going shopping, to meetings, joining friends for breakfast or lunch. Also, the out of shape paparazzi who follow around celebrities can't keep up.

The whole ride was a PR stunt after the gossipy column inspired Crowe to the challenge, but sort of a win/win thing, all in good humor. Thanks for that, Anon 5:47. Agree with you that it looks like they had a good time with it. Looks like Crowe is riding a Trek Fuel of some sort, probably a year old or so.

Reporter is on a Cannondale Scalpel I kept an eye out for Crowe when I was in Sydney ... to no avail. Lots of folk out on their bikes though, riding in traffic that would scare the pants off me. BTW - Thanks for the link.

@BGW: Yep, he's kitted out nicely and indistinguishable from any other cyclist on the road. I wonder if he ever joins up on group rides? A guy at Specialized says he's met Dempsey at a cycling event and that he's a pretty nice guy. He originally reported that he had never ridden 100 miles in one day. Now he's actually committed to riding the 50-miler, along with George Hincapie and Dave Zabriskie. (And yes, I registered as soon as it was available.) He's head-to-toe Specialized, except maybe the sunglasses.

Wonder if that's just what he went with or if the bike shop (whose kit he's wearing) cut him a deal (or comped him his rig and/or kit). @Maine: Dempsey Challenge -- that is so cool, I didn't know about that or the backstory there.

Does anyone else find these pictures of celebs creepy, particularly the ones where they're with their children?

I mean, I get the idea.
1. You could argue that showing celebs on bikes advances cycling culture.
2. having celebrity names can't hurt the traffic of the site.

But at the same time, it's essentially stalking and a bit of an invasion of privacy. Ben, I've been meaning to post that question as a post or maybe in a poll. Ping me if you don't see that in the next week or so.

I've passed over most of photos with children lately, though obviously not all of them.

Was that you who requested a separate "no celebrity" feed a while back? I typically title these posts "[name] rides a bicycle" and give them a celebrity tag. You can filter those out using Yahoo Pipes. If you want help with that let me know. It was me, but I've mellowed out in my old age. :)

@Sioux: 10-4. Tori Spelling rides a bicycle It's great those kids are wearing helmets, but the adults need to too. The adults are in no danger of hitting their heads on anything! Helmets are absolutely unnecessary for people riding like that.

What's dangerous is the position of those child seats. What's foolish is riding a bike with kids that small. A good example of those who believe they must be able to do everything, all the time. Again with helmet-less celebrities? What the *$%# is up with these people?!? We'll make our kids wear helmets, but we won't. Stupid.

I have to disagree with you, Rapid Robert. Consider that Tori's head is about 4-5 feet off the ground. If she went down, for whatever reason, her family would have wished she had been wearing a helmet. Gripe all you want about helmets and kids on bikes, but please don't shoo t them in the head. A runner's head is 5-6' off the ground. Where's the peer pressure to make THEM wear helmets? Consider statistics. Forget the fourth grade gravity demo with the watermellon. Real life is a bit more complex than that. Gerard Butler rides a bicycle he is also wearing Zoot triathlon shoes ($130 pair of shoes) I think that's more than what I paid for my cycling shoes. About the lock: it's clear that she was upsold. No one needs to carry a lock like that around. If you think you need to carry a lock like that, you're eith riding the wrong bike, or you should take your bike inside. Ha! When you wrote "wraps the chain around her frame" my mind wandered off in the direction of bondage, and I thought "she needs a shorter chain". The lock probably weighs more than she does. She's a retired British supermodel.

She's 26 years old, retired, and spends her days putzing around New York City on an old Dutch bike. Not bad for a B list, I think. She hasn't figured out her next career yet.

That lock is indeed very heavy -- I had one and gave it away because it was just too much for what I need a lock for. She is a supermodel, not a b-list actress. Her lock is perfectly fine for a heavy bike like that, especially in NYC. I sense some "silly little girl listened to the wrong person" paternalism here. Here in NZ it is unusual to see cyclists NOT wearing hi viz and lycra. Anon, I forgot about the NZ helmet law.
