I used to live in Boulder County, Colorado and often biked up the roads in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains near the Fourmile Canyon fire. During an earlier wildfire, a colleague talked me into joining him for a lunch ride. We were a good 20 miles away from the flames, but I still choked on the smoke blanketing the Front Range across Boulder and Weld Counties that day.
I probably damaged my lungs that day. Biking through thick smoke is a really bad idea.

During the Butte Lightning fires back in ’08 there must have been a couple of months where it was essentially unsafe to ride because of the air quality (or lack thereof).
not yet but it pulls really nice behind the brompton…
And people are still running & cycling in the smoke-filled air here in the Boulder area. Some of them are wearing masks to filter some of the smoke.
