I saw this book while walking through the art section at Bookshop Santa Cruz.
This book of twenty cycling climbs from across Europe, the USA and South America offers a glimpse into the allure of reaching the high mountains by bike. Each climb includes a dedicated drawing by Nigel Peake – which can be detached and fitted into an 11 x 14-inch frame – and a description of the climb, including details of its height, length and gradient.
Two California ascents — Onion Valley and Mount Baldy — are included among the American climbs.
I think Peake’s abstractions brilliantly convey the cyclist’s view of the road when you push VO2Max on the way up, while the view dissolves into a blur for the descent.
A copy is still available as of this writing at Bookshop Santa Cruz, where you can find it featured in the Art section. You can also buy online from Amazon.
