Thursday, May. 13 | 6-10pm, The Rickshaw Stop, 155 Fell St. Those legs and that bike in the poster belong to friend of Cyclelicous Meli of Bikes and the City. The photographer, Dustin, recently moved away from San Francisco all the way to the Santa Cruz Mountains. I’m told he lives off grid in a yurt about two valleys away from my home.

Jhong: Bicycle Culture Revolution

“Chinese Bike Culture” once meant millions of Chinese cruising wide bike boulevards on black and basic commuter bikes equipped with fenders, chaincases, heavy duty racks, and sturdy double kickstands. The bicycle was the preferred mode of urban transportation nationwide, with right of way at intersections and ample parking on wide sidewalks. These days, though, public space for bikes shrinks as prosperous Chinese abandon the poor peasant’s pedalcycle in favor of the rich man’s car at a rate of more than on million new cars and SUVs each month.

Some Chinese have gone upscale with their bikes by buying multispeed mountain and road models. Another cadre of Chinese youth take their bike culture cues, perhaps a little ironically, from American urban centers by adopting fixed gear bike style as their own. (more…)

San Francisco Bike Expo Fashion Show

Momentum Magazine and Gwendolyn Lee produced the Bike Style bike fashion show at the San Francisco Bike Expo last Saturday evening.

Momentum are working on their own video of the show that will include specific details of what you’re looking at. I’ll try to update the captions over the next few days with the fashions and bikes in the photos. In the meantime, enjoy the yummy bikes and fashions in my slideshow.

Sponsors include Nutcase Helmets, Breezer Bikes, Crumpler Bags, and Bumble & bumble. Cyclelicious friend Meligrosa modeled for the show and looks fabulous. My buddy Kit was super stoked to see his 53 Miles Per Burrito shirt in the fashion show as well.
