Whatever happened with the $20/mo tax-free bike commuter credit? Someone asked me today and I haven't heard about this in months now. It seemed like it was an HR nightmare and no one really knew how to set it up. Thanks

  • http://www.cyclelicio.us/ Cyclelicious

Commuter Check advertises that option on their website and it's part of their setup. I've heard of a small handful of employers that offer it (don't have a list handy, sorry), but yeah, there's been no mass rush to sign for this. Setup is trivial — like any other employee benefit program.

    Hi,
I'm writing a story for the San Francisco Chronicle about bike fashion. The Chron needs fashion show photos, and I notice you have shots from the SF Bike Expo fashion show. Would you be able to make those available to the Chron? I don't know what their rates are; I'm a freelancer. Also, do you know if photos exist from the SF Bike Coalition fashion show at the Rickshaw stop on May 13? I attended that event, but did not photograph it. Thanks, eric

    Hi Richard,
I am a Bay Area cyclist myself, so I a love your blog. I am hoping you might be able to write about a team of cyclists from the Bay Area who riding in the Death Ride on July 10, and raising money for a nonprofit called TurningWheels for Kids, which builds bikes for kids in need and gives them away during the holidays. Their goal is to raise $60K.
    Here's a link to their info: http://www.active.com/donate/turningwheelsforkids
The group is completely grassroots, and every dollar donated goes toward buying bikes!
    Thanks!

Found an article today about a young guy and some friends riding cross country to raise money for breast cancer. Unfortunatley he was struck and killed New Mexico before reaching their final destination. I love cycling but my biggest deterrent is traffic. Incidents like this only make my fears grow.

The article is like stuff you've posted before.

Keep up the news and more importantly, keep cycling!

I recently read two ‘letter to the editor’ pieces that were aimed at the college aged rider returning to campus. At least one of the letters was along the lines of ‘you’re an adult now, time to stop riding like a kid’. I’m one the local Bicycle Advisory Committee and we’ve been discussing getting something in the college paper. I wanted to go back to these letters but can’t find them. I’m pretty sure I originally found them from links here. Does these letters sound familiar at all?

Also a comment about the lyrics. You’re right, the message is about saving the earth. Also that people should take problems into their own hands. I also translated it in Google, so i realized that half of the text went missing and some of it is lost in translation. That’s sad. On the all I hope You’ll see the beauty in the language, video and music….And of course, by the end of the day we adore bicycles :) )))

  • IRIDE Italian bikes

    Hello Richard,

I like reading your blog. I know you don’t do a lot of product news, but I am wondering if you would post something about these sexy Italian bikes I am importing.

After visiting Italy many times, my new hot Italian wife’s family told me to visit a nearby factory, they know of my bicycle affliction.

The Gemmati Velocipedi factory has been there making high performance IRIDE bikes since 1919. I visited several years in a row, making friends. Noticing I had found the undiscovered Italian bicycle maker, I decided to import their bikes to the USA.

I am bringing in the beautiful track bikes now, with roadsters coming soon. They are classic steel lugged frames, all Italian, with the appropriate Miche gruppo.

See pictures of the factory here: http://www.irideusa.com

    Dear Richard,

I have been checking out your blog and it looks great. I have a product that you may be interested in using. Its called the Clean Bottle. It’s a bottle that unscrews at both ends so you can actually clean it and dry it. It helps athletes easily clean out all that funk and gunk from the bottom of their bottles. We also donate 10% of profits to charities people can vote for on our website.

We started Clean Bottle in May and its been going great. We are in about 500 stores and 8 countries so far, have been reviewed on many sites including lifehacker.com, and will be featured in SELF and PREVENTION Magazines! Most of our pick up came when the founder dressed up like a giant Clean Bottle and ran alongside the riders at the Tour de France. Check out some of the video here: http://www.versus.com/cycling/videos/david-mayer-on-clean-bottle-with-robbie-ventura—stage-18/

We’d love to get you a bottle so you can test it out and let me know your thoughts. If you’d like it would be great if you could review it.

Thanks again and keep up the great work,

    Andrew

  • http://twitter.com/trailsnet Kevin Purdy

I’m curious what your readers think of the following conversation that was recently posted on the trails network blog:

    Subject: bike trails
Don’t quite understand what your problem is with naming of routes.
I ride mountain bikes, whether part of my route goes on to the road or is part of a canal toe path or anything else it is just part of the route.
Essentially, what you are describing is mountain biking, your routes may be a sub genre but I don’t see what the issue is with calling it mountain biking….

I’d be glad to explain the difference between mountain biking and the type of biking I usually do now. I was an avid mountain biker for many years, and the type of biking I now do is as different from mountain biking as mountain biking is from road biking:
When mountain biking, I ride a mountain bike; whereas when trail biking I have the option to use a mountain bike, but may also use a road bike, a recumbent, a tandem, a velocycle, a recumbent trike, a hybrid, a tagalong, a bike trailer, or even a Trikke. Just like with road biking, I can certainly use a mountain bike, but it’s not mountain biking.
Mountain biking, as the name implies, is usually done in the mountains; whereas trail biking may be done in the mountains, but it is more likely to be done on the plains, in the city, on the coast, or even in the desert.
Mountain biking, for better or worse, correctly or incorrectly, is noted for its steep ups & downs, often borderline dangerous style of riding, and caters mainly to riders aged 15 to 40. Obviously there are numerous exceptions to this, but I still mountain bike and would estimate over 90% of the riders I see on the mountain bike trails fall into this category. On the other hand, when I’m on multipurpose trails, every time I go out I see riders aged one (trailers) to four (tagalongs) to 90 (recumbents, hybrids, etc.).
Mountain biking is predominately single-track with a dirt surface. The type of trails I ride are asphalt, concrete, cinder, gravel, and, occasionally, dirt.
And now for the most important point. I read a lot of blogs, and I was shocked to read, in one of the blogs, that less than 1% of the people in the U.S. ride bikes on a regular basis. I’m sure that you would agree with me that that is sad. You probably feel, like I do, that biking is one of life’s greatest pleasures. So how come so few people do it? It would be easy to say, “Because they’re lazy, or boring, or timid, or…” But let’s face it, when your two choices are:
Risk life & limb on a road where, at any minute, a distracted driver may injure or kill you or…
Risk injury on a mountainside trail where you may be taken out by a root, rock, rut, or out-of-control mountain bike or…
Enjoy riding until your 50s, then give up biking altogether when your joints begin to protest at the punishment of riding on steep trails or the start & stop of riding in traffic or…
You can seek out trails that are more mellow such as rail-trails, canal-trails, and other forms of multipurpose trails.
More and more, I am choosing this final alternative, but it is quite difficult to find good, accessible bike rides when they are all bunched into the two categories of mountain biking and road biking.

Now is where I have to admit, I have no idea who you are or what organization you’re with. My guess is that you probably won’t change your mind, no matter what I say… for now.

But the time will come when you will tire of risking your life on the roads and your limbs on the “mountain bike trails,” and you’ll seek out another type of riding because, like me, you love riding your bike. Who knows, maybe you’ll want to take your kids on a ride and won’t want to risk their life or limb. Or maybe you’ll try a recumbent bike and love it. Or possibly you’ll want to go on an active vacation with friends, but some of them will be mountain bikers, some road bikers, some inline skaters, some hikers, and some equestrians; and wouldn’t it be nice if you could find a trail that met all your needs so you could enjoy them together? Or what about a multigenerational outing with little kids, teens, tweny-somethings, middle agers, & grandma/grandpa. You may live in super family where three year old Susie is right on 83 year old grampa’s rear tire on a twisty, bumpy, steep mountain bike trail. But that type of family is pretty rare.

It is my hope that when the time comes, you will be able to go to the popular trail sites such as Everytrail.com, trails.com, trailsnet.com, et al and find the perfect fit in a category that is simply called, “bike trail” or “multitrail.” Hopefully when we make that simple little adjustment, that simple addition of one more trail category, more people will discover the joy of biking, not as an adrenaline high, not as a race, not as some type of constant competition, but just as a form of recreational, environmentally friendly, healthy, and socially enjoyable pastime.

And of course those people who enjoy mountain biking and road biking, like I did for over 40 years of my life, will continue to do so and have a great time. Only once we add one more category of bike trails, the other 99% of the folks can join us in the joyous activity we call biking.

    Hi there!
I am currently interning for a filmmaker named Dr. Hassan Zee, and I came across your blog. He recently wrote, produced, and directed a new independent film called Bicycle Bride. It was shot all in San Francisco. I feel as if your readers would be interested in it and was wondering if you would possibly add a trailer, and some information about the movie.

a trailer can be viewed here:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bj9feetTG3s

and the film’s website can be viewed here:
    http://bicyclebride.com/

The film won best director at the Vacaville Film Festival this past year, along with best film at the SOAPIFF Film Festival. I would realy appreciate it if you would look over the website and watch the trailer! Below is a quick synopsis also-

“Bicycle Bride is a witty film about a rebellious young woman Beena, whose family still clings to their old school beliefs about behavior and marriage for women. She pursues her dreams of freedom – but her Indian mother has other plans, including arranging a marriage for Beena.
Beena confides in her best friend Mary Jane, a Caucasian girl who supports her in every way. When Beena meets James Dean from Sweden and is taken by his European charm, Mary Jane is all for it; she knows James is the boy of Beena’s dreams.
But Beena’s mother has imported Bubba, straight from India, for her daughter. Bubba thinks money grow on trees in America, and he must find those trees and marry Beena. Will Beena give in to what her cultural heritage says is right? Or will she follow her heart and possibly lose her family?”

Hope to hear from you soon,
    Chantel Beam

    Hello Richard –

Here’s Caltrans’ latest update about Hwy 1:

Due to severe roadway damage to the southbound lane, a 2-mile section of Hwy. 1 at Rocky Point (Post Mile 60.5) continues to be closed in both directions north of Big Sur from the Bixby Creek Bridge to Palo Colorado Road south of Carmel. This barricaded closure is for all travel including emergency vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists.

Crews assessing the roadway have tentatively determined that it will be nearly one month until April 16 for a temporary repair to occur. All businesses along the coast on Hwy. 1 remain open. Alternate routes include Highways 101, 68 and 46. More rain is expected in the Monterey Bay Area this week. Condon-Johnson & Associates of Oakland is the contractor for this $2.5 million emergency project and is currently mobilizing for a temporary repair to allow traffic on the roadway as soon as safely possible. They plan to drill vertical soil nails tomorrow to further stabilize the remaining roadway section. It continues to be unsafe for vehicle and pedestrian traffic and remains closed to public access. Continuous updates will be provided as more information becomes available and/or conditions change.

Hi Cyclelicious, my name is Mitch. I came across your website when searching for the top bike websites in the world. I’m not sure if you’ve heard of it so far, but Pedal-Driven is a brand new bike documentary coming out of North Central Washington that’s been making some waves. Here is the press release that was sent out…

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
‘Pedal-Driven: a bike-umentary’ World Premiere Scheduled for 2011 Sea Otter Classic in Monterey.

United by the mission to create a more enjoyable, more sustainable world, the Northwest Emmy-nominated documentary film making team at Howell at the Moon Productions has joined forces with IMBA to create “Pedal-Driven: a bike-umentary”.

This engaging and powerful new documentary film is designed to advance the national discussion around where mountain biking belongs in the American landscape. PEDAL-DRIVEN expertly explores the long-standing conflicts between riders and the federal agencies charged with managing our public lands, as this exploding sport makes its way out of the woods and into the public eye.

The film was created as a non-profit project in affiliation with IMBA and with the cooperation of the US Forest Service, and major funding was provided by Shimano, Specialized, Clif Bar, Diamondback, Yakima Racks, Pyramid Brewing Company, City of Leavenworth, Timberland, and Steven’s Pass Bike Park, with promotional support from Pinkbike.com. All profits will be donated to future trail projects committed to the ideals of sustainable recreation and stewardship of our public lands.

Pedal-Driven will make its world premiere in downtown Monterey, CA at the Golden State Theatre on April 15, 2011 at 7:30. There will be plenty of giveaways at the premiere event, including a Specialized Stumpjumper FSR M5 26er frame (retail value of frame $2,100), and a Specialized Epic FSR 29er frame (retail value of frame $2,000), both outfitted with Shimano components. In addition, there will be a Pedal-Driven contest beginning on Pinkbike.com starting Friday, March 18th with prizes including Osprey Packs and Pedal-Driven merchandise. Following the debut, “Pedal-Driven” will receive an official launch in the Northwest before mounting a U.S. tour.

Individuals and organizations can find up-to-date information about hosting a screening event at http://www.pedaldriven.org. Limited advance copies are available, order yours at http://www.pinkbike.com today and bring the movement to your community!

    Dear Richard,

my name is Michael Valenti and Gene Bisbee gave me your name and said you might have some interest in this opportunity.

I founded a cycling community a few years ago called the Veloist and I am looking for someone to take it over or get involved in a major way. This also includes Veloist Pics-iPad app and a new site we just created called Veloist Connect, a social media service for Bike Retailers.

    veloist.com
    veloistconnect.com
    http://ax.itunes.apple.com/us/app/veloist-pics-world-of-cycling/id400876322?mt=8#ls=1

I would like to know if you would have any interest, or would know any one that may be interested in getting involved.

I believe the Veloist Connect has real revenue potential for someone that understands social media and can reach the retailer audience.

Please let me know if you are interested in a conversation and I can tell you the rest of the story.

    Best regards,

    Mike

Thought you might be interested in learning about Sportsgrants and Project One. Project One is a global fundraising team made up of sports enthusiasts – like cyclists – who can take their scheduled adventures and devote it to fundraise for a worthy cause.

No need to sign up for another race, climb or adventure sport event with hundreds of other adventurers. As a Project One team member you can chose a well-defined cause with a specific goal and timeline and be confident that your efforts will make a direct impact.

You can check out our website at http://sportsgrants.org/index for more info; hope you’ll be able to help us spread the word!

    Hi Richard,

I’m the blogger for a new service called 1000passions that provides unique, behind-the-scenes, real life experiences, and I think you and your audience might be interested in our first two offers which both involve getting the chance to be a member of a pro cycling support team during a major race.

We’re working with the Wonderful Pistachios pro cycling team and have one open slot on their support team for the An Post Rás in Ireland (May 21-30) and one for the TD Bank Philadelphia International Cycling Championship (June 4-5). We’d be thrilled if you’d like to share this info with your audience. My initial blog post about these two opportunities is at:

    http://beta.1000passions.com/1/post/2011/05/two-unique-bicycle-racing-experiences.html

Let me know if you have questions or I can be of any assistance at all.

    Thanks!

    Hi Richard,
We are doing publicity for Ross Goldstein’s new book, Chain Reaction. Hailed as a “real contribution to the sports literature canon,” by Sports Illustrated writer L. Jon
Wertheim, Ross’ new novel is a coming of age story set against the backdrop of
the cutthroat, competitive world of professional bicycle
racing. If you are interested in receiving additional information or a book to review please email me robimmedia@comcast.net.

  • KontactBike.com

I thought your readers might be interested in knowing about a new bicycle saddle brand, http://www.kontactbike.com . Here’s some info…

For anyone who complains about the pressure and discomfort from
their bicycle seat, the Kontact Anatomical bicycle saddle offers a sleek,
research-based design to improve blood flow and relieve soft tissue pressure
while cycling, without the need for a cut-out. Based on the research of Joshua
Cohen PT, MS, the Kontact saddle exhibits a patented decreased angle between
the nose of the saddle and the rear support surface, as well as a flatter rear
surface to support the sit bones instead of the pressing into the soft tissues.
These design features allow the rider to remain over the wider rear section of
the saddle for better pressure distribution. The saddle is marketed towards
recreational and competitive riders and allows for increased ease of leg
motion, which may help in increasing cadence and power. Joshua is also the
    author of Finding
the Perfect Bicycle Seat, a book that details the anatomy and design
    considerations of bicycle saddles. More
information can be found at http://www.kontactbike.com

    While
I hate riding an exercise bike myself, sometimes they’re a necessary evil, as

comparison to you as well and also offer a guest blog post if you’d like.
Completely up to you, but I thought it might be a good way for you to get
some good content and save some time.

I represent these amazing new bikes called Xdream bikes -
Trixter who I suspect you may have heard of makes them.  http://www.trixter.net/xdream

The bikes combine the entertainment and competition of video
games, with fitness.  The bikes take a
tradition stationary bike and add an upper body component with laterally
rotating handlebars, hand brakes and hand gears.  To add to the entertainment value, Xdream added a video
simulation screen that allows the biker to race themselves, the machine or
people sitting on the Xdream bike next to them. The machine records unique
users so as a biker completes each course, the machine presents harder courses
    and faster competition.

If you let me know where you are based I could point you to
a gym that has them and you could give them a try yourself!

  • http://www.mybikeguide.co.uk Bilboburgler

You have a real fun website, lots of interesting ideas all pooled into a great big stream.  I’ve not laughed so much for ages.

I retired last year and I felt that many tourists and specifically North American’s were ripped off when they go on biking tours around the world, I found people paying $4000 to tour for 2 weeks in Italy when the costs were closer to $1250.  I also felt that bike tours tended to be for the fit young (mainly men) and couples.  Bike tours struggle to be a family holiday as there is always someone who is not fit enough, injured, who has not ridden for half a life time etc..

As a result I’ve posted a website who tells people how to manage their own self guided bike tours in Europe in flat areas (got to look after those knees) with strong transport support available from local trains (remember Europe has a well developed train system).  All the info is for free and easy access from bike hire to local foods.

If it is of interest to anyone it’s at http://www.mybikeguide.co.uk

And hi to the Veloist, I saw you further down the page.

  • http://twitter.com/Rainfishumbrell Rainfishumbrella

    Hey William,

I checked it out too. Thought it was pretty cool, seems like it might need a kevlar liner just in case you happen to be traveling down N. Williams or Vancouver Ave. http://bikeportland.org/2011/09/26/500-reward-offered-in-vancouverwilliams-tack-incident-59662  …oops.

So I’m pretty new to posting but thought this might be of interest to someone out there. I have no idea where this post will go or too whom this post is going but do find this sight interesting and dare I say “cutting edge”.

Here’s one I bet you haven’t seen. http://www.youtube.com/user/TheRainfish it may just be an idea whos time has come (at least in Portland Or.) where the avg. annual rainfall is a mere 37.5 inches (nearly 1 meter for the rest of you blokes).

    Thanks cyclelicious

  • http://twitter.com/Rainfishumbrell Rainfishumbrella

    Wow Richard,

You got a lot of pictures on your flicker thing. Ok so, I think I know how this works now and want to say “hi there, great site”. A guy could spend a lot of time just trying to check everything out.

I’m riding by the seat of my pants here a little and mostly have no idea what I’m doing but here goes.

I invented this thing (I’ll call it an umbrella to keep it simple). Where I come from it seems like it would be a useful tool. I’ve used it and found it to be functional and stable when in motion as mounted to a bike (not your typical umbrella). So now I’m comming out of the closet with it and have posted it recently on youtube.

Not too sure this is the proper avenue to take with this sort of thing and I dont have any experience doing this so if I flub this up or say something wrong or inappropriate Please set me straight.

    Sincerely
    Rainfish umbrella

PS. Look I have two posts right next to one another…sorry for the excessive waste of space. Oops, it didn’t turn out the way I expected it to eather (wanted to send my latest video but I still need to upload it).

    Hello,
I am a follower of Cyclelicious and certainly a fan.  I write for UrbanIndy and UrbanOut if you are at all familiar. I recently became involved with a non-profit organization called EverybodyWalk.org and thought of your blog as a possible partner in helping me get the message out about the organization.   You could partner through two easy ways:1.  Feature EveryBodyWalk’s link on your site/blogroll2. Provide me your site logo to be featured on EveryBodyWalk’s urban development/urbanism section here          EverybodyWalk, a site powered by Kaiser Permanente, has asked me to help their efforts in expanding their presence across the country to help develop content on sustainable/walkable communities and their benefits on walking habits.  Thus, I am attempting to get the site’s link up on popular site’s blogrolls.  Are you at all interested?  Let me know.
In case you are curious about what EverybodyWalk does, well here you go: we’re a nonprofit wellness campaign, and our goal is to encourage people to get up, get out, and get walking for 30 minutes, every day. We believe a huge part of getting people to become more active is creating and sustaining an environment and community that encourages these types of activities.

I would love to discuss opportunities to work together through social media, particularly through Facebook and Twitter.  Let me know if you’re interested! We’d also like to welcome you to utilize articles and videos on our site, and post them on your blog. We hope that by sharing our content, you’ll be able to grow your audience as well.  Likewise, we’d be happy to feature your work on EverybodyWalk, with full credit and a link to your blog.
Please feel free to reach out with any questions. Looking forward to hearing from you soon. Thank you, Greg Meckstrothgmeckstroth@gmail.comhttp://twitter.com/everybodywalkhttp://facebook.com/everybodywalk

    Hello Richard,

I figured I’d say “hello and thanks” here because I’m not very familiar with Twitter and how to use it. Thats nice of you to follow me even though I’m a little lost, maybe you could tell me how to follow you… that might be better.

So anyway here is the video, I guess, if thats ok… I see other people post stuff here for you to check out. Which is kinda handy by the way, like I said ” a guy could spend a lot of time trying to check every thing out”. http://www.youtube.com/user/TheRainfish I'm pretty happy to have captured this, even though its a little bouncy and it wasn’t the down pour I was hoping for. No telling when I’ll have all the elements in place again, rain, daylight and someone to hold the borrowed camera. For what its worth I’m having fun with it.

Oh and by the way I titled it “Rainfish ride with rain”. I saw the photos from your Gran ride, an event best held without rain for sure. I’m just a recreational rider but that looked kicka$$ (please excuse the French, I know it’s an Italian named event).

    Cheers
    Rainfish

Hi Richard. I thought you might enjoy a project myself and a good friend have been working on for the last 2 years, called ‘Bicycle Portraits’. Our 6000 kilometer journey around South Africa by bicycle aimed to be a photographic study of South African commuter culture (something that is nearly non-existent here), but it’s turned into a portrait of a nation through the bicycles that they own and ride every day, revealing all manner of social, historical, class and cultural nuances never imagined. We are about to publish the best 165 portraits (from over 500 photographed) in book form, accompanied by 6 essays and beautiful watercolor maps for each portrait indicating where it was photographed. We are currently in the last phase of fundraising through pre-sales of the books (plus great extras like prints and special editions) on the wonderful Kickstarter platform.

Please have a look at http://www.bicycleportraits.co.za/kickstarter for our Kickstarter page, or visit http://www.bicycleportraits.co.za to see the project online – and please spread the word!

Hope you like it! Ride safe!
