San Jose Bike Train – next ride Wednesday February 19 2014

San Jose Bike Train February 19 2014

San Jose Bike Train runs on the first and third Thursday of each month. This means our next scheduled ride departs Diridon Station next Wednesday, February 19, 2014.

We’ve changed the start time to 8 AM. If you’re on your way to join in but are running late, please either leave a comment on the Facebook event page and we’ll hold the train for up to 20 minutes as we enjoy our coffees at Bel Bacio Caffe in San Jose’s Little Italy.

San Jose Bike Train is an inclusive, slow pace social ride designed specifically to encourage newcomers to ride their bikes to work. Dress for the weather but I assure you the uber-athletic look are completely optional.

This train goes north along the Guadalupe River Trail, an absolutely wonderful bikeway serving destinations along the Guadalupe Parkway / North 1st Street Corridor. If you work near 1st Street along Hedding Street, SJC Airport / Technology Drive, Montague Expressway, River Oaks, or Tasman, this ride is for you. I also make my way over to the Oracle Agnew Campus in Santa Clara from this train.

San Jose: Lower Guadalupe River trail detours next week

The Santa Clara Valley Water District will close portions of the Guadalupe River Trail from February 18 to February 21, 2014 to remove non-native vegetation.

The east side of the trail will be closed between 8:30 AM and 3 PM on Tuesday, February 18 between the Green Island Bridge and Trimble Road. This means commuters will need to find a detour to get past Highway 101. If you’re comfortable with heavy traffic merging to and from Highway 101, feel free to jog around Ewert Road around the north end of the airport to access Trimble, then bike over 101 on Trimble. In the map, I show the Guadalupe River Trail in dark green, the closed part of the trail in red, and a couple of suggested detours in teal if you prefer to avoid traffic conflicts (yeah, I know).

Ewert Road around San Jose Airport

When San Jose International Airport built the “hands” parking garage and converted the old “Green Island” rental lot at the north side of the airport into the economy parking lot, the former economy lot on the Santa Clara side of the airport was no longer needed. Besides a small area used for police motorcycle training, those old lots are now closed and fenced off. Ewert Road — the road around the north perimeter of the airport — is also closed and signed for “AUTHORIZED VEHICLES ONLY.”

San Jose trail upgrades coming this year

The city of San Jose, California has one of the largest urban trail networks in the nation, with over 50 miles of trails open to the public. Several “core” trails — Guadalupe River, Coyote Creek and Highway 87 Bikeway — extend for several miles and are suitable for commuters as well as recreational use.

A number of trail improvement projects are funded. Here’s what to look for over the next year or two.
