San Jose and San Francisco will hold launch events for the Bay Area Bike Share grand opening next Thursday, August 29, 2013.

Here’s a look at downtown traffic on Friday night. On the bike it doesn’t seem so bad. After I boarded the bus it took a while to get across town.
If you must drive, consider driving to one of the park and ride lots next to a light rail station, then take light rail to downtown. If you bike, you don’t need to ride with the heavy traffic on Santa Clara Street like I did for this video. San Fernando Street is much better for biking. Free secure bike parking is available on Paseo de San Antonio between the Fairmont and Muji just west of First Street.
Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition will provide free valet bicycle parking at the San Jose Summer Jazz Festival Friday through Sunday. You can find the bike parking on Paseo de San Antonio between First and Cesar Chavez Plaza behind the Fairmont Hotel.
The Jazz Festival website highlights the copious public parking available all around downtown San Jose, but they also mention the various public transportation options are available to and near downtown . VTA light rail takes you Right There as do the several downtown bus lines. Caltrain and Capitol Corridor stop at Diridon Station, which is about a 15 minute walk from downtown (and too bad bike share isn’t available just yet!) DASH — the free Diridon to downtown shuttle — only runs during the week, but it runs until after 9 PM so Friday participants can take advantage of the ride.

Because San Fernando Street will be closed between Market Street and Almaden Avenue beginning tomorrow morning at about 10 AM, VTA will reroute several bus routes around the closure Friday through Sunday. If you ride VTA 63, 64, 65, 81, 181, DASH, Hwy 17, or MST 55 and use any of the downtown stops, pay attention, because some of the stops will be eliminated this weekend!

Say hello to Mike. This San Francisco native has worked at Capital Bikeshare in DC for the past three years and jumped at the chance to move back to the Bay Area when Alta won the bid for our local bike share.

His crew are mostly from other Alta operations around the United States. These Eastern timezone workers have been getting started at 6 AM for their installs in San Jose. They’re done by noon so they can spend the afternoon sipping drip brewed coffee at Philz at Paseo de San Antonio.

The final five stations will be installed beginning early Wednesday morning at the Children’s Discovery Museum Park, San Salvador @ 9th, 4th @ San Carlos, Paseo de San Antonio, Fountain Alley, and San Pedro Square.
Hmm, that’s six locations so I messed up on one of these.
The first person to leave a comment with links to photos for all five new sites installed on Wednesday gets a free day pass for BABS from me. Lady Fleur, employees of the city of San Jose bike program (I’m talking about you, John), and Alta Bike Share employees are not eligible.

Lady Fleur and I heard the San Francisco Bay Area Bikeshare program are installing five bike share locations each day on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of this week, so we went on a hunt for the first five locations last night.
The first location was easy because the San Jose bike program had tweeted about the Arena Green location on Autumn Street across from the SAP Center.
