Colin is deputy director of the Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition. Bay Area Bike Share is the bike sharing program coming to San Jose, Mountain View, Palo Alto, Redwood City and San Francisco by the end of this month.

As a young man, Mark Catalana set a goal for himself of 100,000 miles traveled by bike. He was 1,400 miles short of this goal when he was struck down by the driver of a gray Nissan on San Tomas Expressway over Winchester Boulevard on April 15, 2013. The driver drifted into the shoulder and sideswiped Catalana at near highway speed. Catalana went down hard and shattered his hip.
Catalana was well on his way to recovery when he suddenly fell ill, was transported to the hospital, and perished when a blood clot from his healing wounds caused a fatal heart attack. The sudden death of this 49 year old pastor stunned the congregation at St Thomas of Canterbury Catholic Church in San Jose.
The Bay Area native used his bicycle as his main mode of transportation. He religiously tracked his miles as he meditated on his bike. One of the cyclists in Catalana’s congregation, Bill Wright, encouraged the other members of the church to complete the 100,000 miles. 115 people logged 8600 miles — six times more than needed — in memory of Father Catalana.

Is Bike Share a secret war on cars inflicted on hapless innocents who are hated by the elitist socialists in positions of political power? Or maybe it’s just an easier way to get around the cities of San Jose, Mountain View, Palo Alto, Redwood City and San Francisco.
Lady Fleur shares a few opinions on the bike share bike as she and SVBC staffer Megan Maleck (rhymes with Dalek) took a tour of the South Bay on a demo bike, including one from Yours Truly in which I pronounce the ride is laterally stiff yet vertically compliant.

Some of the people behind San Jose Bike Party now bring you “Guerrillaz In Da Mixx” featuring Deep Crates DJs Jason Douglas and Matt Holland.
This mobile bicycle dance party seeks out the forgotten, the forbidden and utilizes the element of surprise and extraordinary mobility, according to event organizers.
Rides will never be a race – Getting to any party early is never a good idea! 12-15 miles total with 1-2 longggg dance stops. Routes will never be posted, but 24 hours prior to the ride, key areas along the route will be provided to integrate yourself if you miss the start.
This ride is different from San Jose Bike Party, with a single posse of synced up sound systems playing a single playlist rather than the several sound systems you see at Bike Party.
The first GIDM begins this Friday night, July 26 2013 8 PM at the San Pedro Square Market in downtown San Jose. For more information, see the event Facebook page. Andrew Boone has also posted details at the Peninsula Bike Party website where he’s organized a Sunnyvale feeder ride.
