Thelma and Doris graduated from college in 1944 and decided to spend the summer touring on bike from Buffalo, New York to Cairo, Illinois. Thelma’s Victory Bike had one speed, Doris’s bike had two speeds. They carried sleeping bags, clothing, cooking gear and other supplies strapped to rear racks and in handlebar bags.
I haven’t read the whole story yet but it looks like a good read.
The one on the right reminds me of my Mom, cateye glasses and all. 'Course she was only 10 years old in 1944.
She's a pretty tough broad. Yesterday, we were on a bus that was filled up. She had to stand. About 5 guys offered her their seat and she didn't know what all the fuss was about.

I checked out the story, great bike touring journal for any generation.
