How tomorrow moves

This is off-topic, but I’m a railfan. Here’s a nice advertisement from CSX Rail.

“What can a car that gets 50 miles to the gallon do for the environment? Not nearly as much as the car that’s carrying it. Our trains can carry a ton of freight 423 miles on one gallon of fuel.”

Presumably that weight/distance/fuel volume is once the train has finished accelerating for an optimally loaded engine. Not to knock rail, I think its a lot better when its available, but that figure seems somehow dishonest.

I'm dubious about the 423 mpg claim, but I don't even know how to begin verifying that claim.
