Iconic and iconoclastic singer / songwriter / musician Lou Reed passed yesterday from liver disease. He was known for riding his bicycle around Manhattan with his camera, which seems like such a subversive yet pedestrian activity.

Cincinnati Reds outfielder Donald Lutz rides a Dahon Jetstream P8 folding bicycle.

Lutz debuted in the majors this past spring with the Cincinnati Reds and garnered international media attention with his first MLB hit off of the Chicago Cubs and career homerun against the Milwaukee Brewers in May. In his breakout season, the 24-year-old had a .241 batting average with 8 RBIs.

I’m pretty sure this is a product endorsement that Cannondale would rather avoid. The President of Syria, who won the last Presidential election with an astounding 97% of the counted votes, enjoys a relaxing break from mass murder with a bicycle ride as one of his young children rides along.

The Syrian dictator’s wife, Asma al-Assad, is an annual supporter of and frequent participant in an annual 100 km “Let’s Push Israel into the Sea!” ride that the Follow the Women Foundation euphemistically calls “Pedaling for Peace.”

Earlier this summer, the Onion reports al-Assad hopes 2013 will be remembered as the year of the bicycle in Syria.
