Huntington Beach Bike Party

Or something like that.

Big surf competition at Huntington Beach, California over the weekend took a turn for the worse when some moron tossed a ketchup bottle into the crowd. Things escalated, and before you know it another moron is pitching a street sign through the window of this bike and skate shop. The LA Times says shop employees and locals defended the shop against the miscreants.

Impeding traffic as a pretext for warrantless search

Old news I know, but I missed it since I was on vacation.

A group of people cycling down four lane Western Avenue in Gardena, CA are stopped and cited for “impeding traffic,” frisked, and then lectured by clue-impaired Gardena officers that they should stay out of traffic because, apparently, they refuse to enforce traffic laws against motorists. The only law that matters for Gardena PD is the one that doesn’t exist: YOU MUST GO FASTER AND STAY OUT OF THE WAY!

The USA Pro Cycling Challenge begins August 19 in Aspen, Colorado. I haven’t heard of any women’s events for the Colorado race; at least Amgen Tour of California has a token (if untelevised) women’s time trial or criterium in most years.

For great professional women’s racing this weekend, don’t miss the 8th Annual Menlo Park Grand Prix on Sunday, Menlo Park, California.

Unusual bike racks

Lady Fleur reviews an old and interesting bike rack that she calls the Jaws of Death Torture Rack. It’s a design that dates from the 70s, and creator of this rack apparently invited thieves to test their design with a contest. The design is such that a simple padlock is protected from cutting and grinding attacks.

Near my home we have a few racks dating from the 80s that look like this.

Equestrian drive through service denied

You know how cyclists are often denied service at drive-through windows because of vague insurance rules?

Somebody tried it with a horse in Manchester, England. The rider wasn’t allowed to order from the drive-through window.

McDonald’s drive-thru policy is clear, the company’s spokeswoman clarified, with restaurants “unable to serve pedestrians, bicycle riders or customers on horseback”.

The woman then led the animal inside, where it “ended up doing his business on the floor”, a Greater Manchester Police spokesman said.

If the rider can’t use the drive through, I’m not sure what McDonald’s expected her to do. More at the BBC: Horse in McDonald’s: Rider fined after ‘drive-thru’ refusal.

The Register points out that “tanks, improbably long missile transportation trailers and giant dumper trucks” qualify as “motor vehicles,” which are allowed in McDonald’s drive-through policy, and invites readers to submit videos of themselves ordering their Big Mac from such conveyances.

Santa Cruz Bike Party Friday June 21 2013

Santa Cruz Bike Party has moved from the fourth Friday to the second Friday of every month. This means no more conflict with San Jose Bike Party. It also means the next Santa Cruz Bike Party happens tomorrow, July 12, 2013. The theme this Friday is The Rainbow Ride.

People Power Santa Cruz announced a couple of wins this week at Santa Cruz city hall. First of all, the new city budget includes a position for a bicycle planner in the city’s transportation department. Second, the council finally decided to resolve a longstanding dispute regarding the city’s distribution of abandoned bikes. You can read the full sordid tale here, but the short of it is that the city agreed to open up the abandoned bike distribution program again.

Pro mountain bike Matthew Slaven shot and injured as he walked through a public park in Santa Cruz, California. The park where he was shot, San Lorenzo Park on Dakota Avenue, can be pretty sketchy. I avoid that area even during the day.

A new bicycle pump track will be built in Westside Santa Cruz.
