39 year old superstar Jennifer Lopez completed a half-mile swim, 18-mile bike ride and 4-mile run yesterday in the Nautica Malibu Triathlon -- her first -- in a time of 2 hours, 23 minutes and 28 seconds.
Other celebrities who swam, biked and ran in Malibue include Amanda Detmer, Nicholas Gonzales (who looks like a runner), Jon Cryer (who looks tired), James Denton, Matthew McConaughey, Brittany Daniel, Estella Warren and Eliza Dushku. Even real athletes like Anna Kournikova and Amanda Beard were among the 2,000 people who participated.
We see a *lot* of Specalized bicycles among the Hollywood celebrities! Here's Eliza Dushku with what looks like a 2007 but brand new Specialized Ruby Comp (Compact).
Riding Pretty writes: "The way I see it, when pop culture icons ride bicycles they are helping the planet, proving there is some thing you can do (besides saving money on gas) and Yes, looking oh so pretty riding on a bicycle… The influence can be so positive on kids who will be asking their parents if they can get a cruiser like Miley has." "Grey's Anatomy" star Patrick Dempsey is seen riding the streets of Brentwood fully kitted out on what looks like a 2008 Specialized Tarmac SL. And boy, he sure does like the full Specialized kit, but then Specialized sponsors his car racing team.
Patrick Dempsey spoke with Bicycling magazine a short time back where he talks about how he got into bicycling. He says, "There are two types of riders: There are the ones who are very friendly, but then there are the ones who take themselves way too seriously and ignore you. I don't know where the attitude comes from. It's like we're all out there having a good time, but they're too cool for school."

Wow, I wish Courtney Cox was my friend! Courtney bought her friend Jennifer Aniston a shiny new designer $12,000 one-of-a-kind Chanel bicycle after Aniston expressed an interest in hitting Los Angeles’ bike lanes. According to "a source," “Jennifer said she wanted to start bike riding because it’s such good exercise. So Courteney sent her the new, ultra-chic Chanel bicycle.”
The bike features eight speeds, weighs 36lbs and comes complete with a quilted leather seat and saddlebag emblazoned with the famous Chanel ‘CC’ logo.
The source continued: “Courteney only sent Jennifer the bike two weeks ago but she already loves it! She goes out riding all the time.”

Another celebrity bike rider! From news reports:
Rialto Police Sgt Don Lewis said Rodney King told police the shooting took place while he was riding his bicycle in neighboring San Bernardino. King rode his bicycle home after the incident and it was not immediately clear who fired the shot, Lewis said.
Chanel has apparently announced a $12,000 city bike as part of the fashion house's 2008 spring/summer collection. So far, only fuzzy black-and-white images of this bike are available, which features black leather saddle and saddle bag, 8 speed hub gearing on a *cough* "lightweight" 36 pound bike.
Although the Chanel bike features fenders and a chainguard, Chanel last summer also introduced jeweled pant clips to keep your pants from getting caught in the chain.

Jorja Fox plays the brainy brunette on CSI. She demonstrates her smarts by confessing, "The only crime here is that we don't have bicycles." Jorja and Katherine of SpinDaily visit Orange 20 Bikes in Los Angeles, trying out a hybrid, a nice Breezer Bike, and even a fixed gear bicycle. Jorja needs a bike that can carry a surf board on the bike.
Some select quotes:
"If I had a bike, I wouldn't have to worry about two hour parking or parking meters. It would save me hundreds of dollars a year on parking tickets."
"Prius. That's a cop out."
(After trying a fixed gear): "That is awesome. You should try this, Kat. I've never ridden anything like that. It's so cool." After that, Katherine tries to trackstand and falls flat over, but big props to her for trying!
Filming is under way for the film Blonde Ambition, in which Jessica Simpson stars as a woman working her way up the corporate ladder, while finding love and battling helmet hair along the way. Hopefully, she'll also learn how to sling that messenger bag over her back instead of letting it dangle in front like that. I think the kneepads, pink legwarmers and multicolored document tubes rule.
The bike looks like an older steel singlespeed mountain bike with slicks and rigid fork, which works well for cycling in the urban environment.
Jessica Simpson, incidentally, has a Bacon number of 2. Kevin Bacon played Jack Casey, a stockbroker who lost everything and then found love as a bike messenger in the movie Quicksilver.

By Yokota FritzHere's the police report on the Smoking Gun. You might recall the San Antonio bike cops who issued a traffic citation to Mr. Tony Loser Parker. After reading the police report, I believe these cops showed an admirable level of restraint.
Take a star athlete, a famous actress, a bicycle cop, a vehicular incident, mix in some racial tension and what do you get?
A traffic violation that's better suited for a prime-time soap opera.
An officer on a bicycle saw Parker's stopped car holding up traffic early Saturday and rapped the hood with his hand, according to a police report. Parker, behind the wheel as Longoria sat in the passenger's seat, questioned why the officer touched the car, and the couple "began screaming in a verbally abusive and demeaning manner," police said.

Why don't any of these celebrities ever wear helmets? You have my vote to stop posting these pics unless they do.

Apropos of the John Hickenlooper photo, the risk of severe head trauma while playing basketball is about the same as that of cycling (and baseball, too, where batters are required to wear helmets). Those pro ball players should wear helmets too!
Since Mayor Hickenlooper is both riding a bike and handling a basketball, does that mean his risk of head injury is double?
Celebrities and bicycles
I love seeing pictures of celebrities and bicycles!! (Although I don't know who that first person is.)

Celebrities and their children on bicycles
the paparazzi pics are a bit creepy dawg.
Agreed. It's gotta suck when you just want to take a ride with your kids and people are taking photos of you...
Especially Punky Brewster...you'd think people would leave her alone after 15 years...
OK, I recognize these folks. Creepy or not, it's fun to see "famous" people riding bikes.
Did you see the pic of the Carters with their new Rivendells?
Tony, I missed that. His stolen bikes were replaced?
Billy Zane on a bicycle
I'm not a movie buff what so ever, so I had to google Billy Zane, and then I still didn't know who he was or really even heard of any of the movies he's been in.
Jake Gyllenhaal, heard of him but never seen him in a movie either.
Either way, if it brings attention to bikes and riding bikes, coolio!
No idea myself, to be honest :-) I just pass along what I see
I was thinking, "Zane... Zane Grey?" s
I didn't particularly care for the fact that the caption inferred that Billy was "uncool" because he was riding a bike with a basket. There is even an exclamation point after basket...
To me, that's the coolest thing about the picture. Oh well, to each his own, I suppose.
I think they both look damn good. Billy's got the awesome traditional tweed kinda look going on and Jake is lookin' mean in those bike shorts.
You all mean to tell me you don't know who Jake Gyllenhaal is?
Um. Brokeback Mountain?
You all just sit at home watching "Breaking Away" on laserdisc all day, don't you? ;)
I also disagree with the 'uncool' caption, but it's part of the terms of the license I agree to when I use these photos. I think the bike is cool.
@Kit: 'The Karate Kid.' Another cool bike movie, even if the hero does get a car at the end. The bike is Daniel's freedom, independence and transportation and is the metaphor for the 'balance' that Miyagi-san teaches as essential for life and karate.
Are there bikes in Brokeback Mountain?
I will have to watch the karate kid again with new eyes. :) By the way I love "Breaking Away," although I'm a little skeptical about that kid getting his steel frame up to 60mph.
No bikes in Brokeback, but they would probably be impractical for back country cattle ranching, so they use a low-emissions vehicle that predates the bike: a horse.

Apologies if this reposts, I kept getting errors.
Erik beat me to it. Where are their helmets?
And what's with Billy Ray? He lets Miley date a 20+ year old and he lets her leave the house without a helmet. If Miley's fooling around on her bike and with her beau, then both are illegal in California.
Wow... an article on leather helmets as fashion, followed by one on Hannah Montana riding her cruiser. Wake me up in spring when real bike news starts happening again...
I know, I get pretty silly sometimes. Watch for Tour of California coverage and photography here beginning February 14, and NAHBS show coverage Feb 27 through March 1. I also have a pretty large backlog of product reviews coming up. Oh, and some more giveaways real soon, too :-)

Jennifer Lopez on a bicycle
These may be the first photos I've ever seen of celebrities wearing bike helmets.
So much wrong with that shot though. A loose fitting shirt, shoes with STRAPS, etc...

Miley Cyrus rides a bicycle
you're kidding right? you must be aching for material. just because billy ray drives a hummer does not mean he should be featured on the Dakar Rally site...
OMG. I'm totally going to ride around on sidewalks with no helmet. LOL.
Oh my... I'm going to tell all of my friends!
Anon 9:16 -- it was a long weekend that I spent with my family. This was a "fluff" post that I scheduled a couple of weeks back in anticipation of 3 days off of the computer.
I'm not aching for material (there's much more than I can handle, to be honest, even if I keep my focus in Northern California) -- I'm aching for time.
One day you win the Olympic Time Trial, next thing you know, you're a disgraced doper. Miley... in a few years she'll be driving a sports car to the Sky Bar and flashing her v-j-j to the paparazzi as she gets out, presaging her arrest for DUI. Will she find redemption doing ads for Breezer Bikes? Time will tell.
anonymous - Don't tell me people don't buy fancy cars in part to strive toward the image cars hold within T.V., Film and the actors who drive to every occasion. I think it's a good thing that bikes are getting this kind of exposure. Yeah I don't like sidewalk riding either, but I also notice that 4 out of 5 of those photos are on the road and the young girl in the group may not be old enough to ride comfortably on some streets.
Paris Hilton buys a bicycle
so you have "pretty girls with bikes" on your blog as well this week.
i remember seeing pix of her riding a nice specialized hardtail a few months before. i know she's seems to dig publicity, but i feel kind of sorry for her seeing all the people up in her face while she was shopping. i'd be annoyed.

Patrick Dempsey rides a bike
wait, specialized sponsors a car racing team?
the same specialized that puts out this t-shirt and jersey? http://tinyurl.com/3hojyg
Kinda weird, huh? The press release from last December almost looks like an April Fools joke:
Today Specialized Bicycle Components announced a marketing and technical partnership with Hyper Sport LLC and its professional sports car racing programs in the Grand Am-sanctioned Rolex Series and Koni Challenge Series. As the Official Fitness Partner for Hyper Sport, Specialized will provide equipment and training support for the Hyper Sport drivers and team, including actor and professional driver Patrick Dempsey and co-drivers Joe Foster, Charles Espenlaub and Rick Skelton.
Once Dempsey witnessed the 2007 Tour de France as a guest of Specialized, he incorporated near daily rides on his Specialized S-Works Tarmac SL2 road bike into his training regime. “My first experience in the SoBe Mazda RX-8 GT last season really struck home the importance of cardio training as well as overall muscular balance. I really enjoy riding as my primary cardio activity, and our whole team is very excited to be associated with Specialized. Patrick’s co-driver Joe Foster adds “Specialized is a perfect match, along with our partners Mazda and SoBe, who both market toward a fitness-oriented audience.”
As a premier manufacturer of high-end road and mountain bikes and equipment, Specialized is excited to expose their brand to the thousands of high-end sports car fans, drivers and teams in the Grand Am paddock.
“Sponsoring a professional sports car racing team is a natural extension of the work we are already doing with professional athletes and teams in both the bicycle and motor-sports sectors. Our motor-sports athletes demand the highest fit and technology when it comes to race material, and through bicycles, we can offer the same for their training. We’re excited to bring that technology and expertise to Hyper Sport,” said Ben Capron, Specialized Global Marketing Director.
Very, very twisted.
Yeah, twisted for sure. The T-Shirt I got as swag from a local shop and the jerseys they are selling mock the "Nascar" logo - playing with the colors and screaming "OneLessCar" in the NASCAR blocky letters, and "Racing" in script - all with the checkered flags and such.
Sad, for sure. Maybe GM will buy them.
Howdy--
I'm a waver and a helmet-nodder. I've even been known to thrown down a peace sign or a shaka-brah if I'm somehow really moved. I love seeing other people on bikes.
On the other hand, I never quite get it when someone is so put off when they don't get love from other riders. We all have bad days, and I know I don't always feel like offering a cheery greeting to every stranger I see, even if they favor the same mode of conveyance.
I think Patrick is a little self-conscious about sporting that team kit (I know I would be), and he's looking for some personal affirmation. If you don't wave to him, he's not cool; hence, you're too cool.
Happy Trails, Ron
I admit that I've felt snubbed by passing cyclists, but on the other hand I've also done the snubbing myself as a fine example of the pot calling the kettle black.
...guilty as charged (pot calling kettle...), but i love being all kitted out & offering a cheery hello to an older couple out on their neighborhood bicycle constitutional...just may be me in 20 years...
Jennifer Aniston was a bike messenger
Interesting, but what's up with the string of celebrity posts. Did you just get a subscription to Us Weekly
...'people magazine', james...someone told fritz he was a people kinda person & he took it to heart & got the subscription...

Sue, that's kinda funny. I saw the post, but I've been to Pomona and wondered (at first) what your connection to California was when I first saw the post, thinking that you knew Britney personally.

You like her because of the flair, Warren.
Jennifer Aniston's new $12,000 bike
...dear jennifer...i'd like to offer the services of BGW's new 'cycling companionship program'...ride, learn about & enjoy cycling w/ a experienced old school wheelman...my prices are reasonable, my schedule is free & i'm more than willing...
...the only impediment i can see, & it's certainly surmountable, would be that restraining order you asked the judge to impose, regarding my not being within 100 miles of you at any time...
...gosh, w/ that lifted, we'd be good to go...
...call me...
...ciao, baby...
After I posted somthing similar my blog started getting hits from Jennifer Aniston fans. There is some sort of aggegator or bot or something that crawls the web and grabs any article or page that has the phrase 'jennifer aniston' and then puts it on a web page.
And wasn't somebody saying te cycling commuters they saw were kinda rumpled? SNork...
Great, now I have competition...
I hope TMZ catches up with Jenn on the bike!
man, that bikes sucks.
...at 12g's & 36lb's it sucks...
...but otherwise it looks like a typical dutch or danish town bike that happens to be dressed up in an expensive coco chanel outfit...

Kate Hudson rides a bicycle
...i was gonna e-mail this to ya on the side, but what the hell... ...after checking out the photos of the lovely kate hudson on her bike, it came to my attention that the toe-clips on her trek, were designed by yours truly years ago...
...i was working in the industry at the time & the project was through huang kuang (i think they've since been absorbed)in taiwan...while the biz was switching to clipless at the time, my design, asymmetrical w/ a specific left & right is still around & being used on a lotta low end bikes... ...g-fish will confirm that as one of the longest running designs to come through his company...thus the trek connection...
=v= Robin Williams has been known to show up at the occasional event on a bike.
Interesting story bikesgonewild. I must point out though that it takes a true bike geek to somehow zone in on the toeclips in the above photos. I barely even noticed the bike.
Where is her helmet?
...i'll defend myself, only by saying that the woman is lovely from head to toe...hah!...

Chanel bicycle
It seems that every 5 - 10 years some or other fashion house in Paris or Milan discovers the bicycle. Just like auto manufacturers who periodically stick a folding bike in the boot of their latest lemon. What always amazes me is how lazy the ad/marketing departments are. Always, it seems, just as in this case, the seat will be on an odd angle and other accessories (here, the headlamp) will be poking off somewhere else. Aesthetically eugh! And these guys are supposed to be style gurus? They should at least spring 15 bucks and get an LBS to assemble the bike before the photograph it. Could be worse. They could be hawking gold plated Segways.
Not quite gold plated, but here you go.
Jorja Fox goes bike shopping

Jessica Simpson plays Bike Messenger
Sounds familiar.
Messengers (1999, Japan) "Naomi, a successful fashion press agent, is having a bad day. Her business is shut down, everything she has is repossesed, and she accidentally runs down a bicycle messenger with her car. To get out of paying for the messenger's medical bills, she agrees to take his place at the struggling courier company he and his friend run. Though she hates the job at first, she soon comes to see its good points, and helps the company's owner, Suzuki, to win a valuable courier contract away from a bullying motorcycle messenger service."
Man, where is dat set? Santa in da HOUSE!
Could they have picked anyone worse to portray a bike messenger? It doesn't look like she knows how to ride a bike.
Ummm...where's her lock? ;)
It doesn't just look like she doesn't know how to ride a bike, she looks incredibly uncomfortable and self conscious at the same time. She is way too clean too. Here's a link to the Japanese "Messengers" show Paul Tay mentioned.
My wife (sticking up for the the underdog) reminds us that costumers pick the outfits. It's not really Jessica's fault that she's wearing that interesting facsimile of bike messenger gear.
She's actually wearing a messenger bag on her back, despite what the post says. The one that's visible is a second (?) bag. (Her makeup maybe?)
Sad as this may sound, she is pretty hot...
She's way over dressed compared to the extras. If a guy is carrying his jacket then its gotta be at least 60s degrees. I’d be wearing way less clothes but still be sweating my butt off. Ditch the leather coat for something that breathes, NEVER wear a bulky scarf and enjoy the sweat trickling down the small of my back as I bust my tail around town. Two basic concepts: hard work & functionality over fashion. Radio? Lock? Is that what's in the low slung bag that would be knockin knees and dragging in spokes all day? This flick is sure to flop. Third concept of value: sexist attention
yep she looks uncomfortable on a bike.. yep her bag is way to low and should snag her ass or at least pull her off the bike... kneepads really only work on downhill runs.. she looks like she is wearing rollerblade wrist guards too...
by the look of it her forks look bent (forward) too cause of the huge rake (well it looks that way)
