Sterilized bike lanes

Bike lanes blocked by double parkers, delivery trucks, and debris are a fact of life for many American cyclists. This week, many year round cyclists are dealing with bike lanes that are used as road side snow storage as snow plows push ice and snow into the bike lane.

If your bike lanes are rendered useuless like this, you might enjoy this story on new bike lanes in Jakarta, Indonesia.

In order to ensure the safety of the cyclists as well as to sterilize the special tracks from other road users, Syahrul said the tracks would be guarded round-the-clock by public order officers.

I don’t know if something was lost in translation or not, but it appears Jakarta plans to post policemen along the bike lane to keep car drivers out of the lane.

Would you believe there are even fixie hipsters in Indonesia? 8000 of them in Jakarta, according to that news article.

The Cyclelicious Route Finder works in Jakarta, though I can’t vouch for the accuracy of bike facility information there.

The below is not Jakarta.

Yes, there are a lot of fixie hipsters in Jakarta. They love to ride up and down the main thoroughfare in gaggles on Car Free Day.

It’s wonderful that the city is showing interest in cyclists. When I lived there (2006-2010) the governor was quoted as saying he would build bike lanes “when there were a million cyclists” in Jakarta. Ha! So I’m excited about this development. But a lot of grand plans that get announced in Jakarta never happen, and the part about the police sounds especially unlikely. Police there do little besides blow their whistles pointlessly and pull people over to collect bribes.
