Sun Bicycles offers the “Streamway” — an ultra-low step through frame.
I’ve known men who ride “ladies” bikes because of hip problems. Joint stiffness gives them a great deal of difficulty in swinging a leg over the top of a conventional diamond frame, but they still want to ride and otherwise have better mobility on two wheels than on foot hobbling with a cane.
When I first saw the Streamway at Interbike in 2007, I knew intuitively that this bike was designed specifically for those with impaired mobility. Note that the “top tube” is below the bottom bracket!
Other than the ultra-low frame, this is your basic bike — alloy frame, 170mm cranks, 26 x 1.95″ tires, upright seating posture on a cushy saddle, front and rear fenders, chainguard, and kickstand. It’s available in a single size (16″ frame size), but the slack seatpost angle gives you kind of a built-in cockpit length adjustment with your height adjustment. The bikes is available as singlespeed, 3 speed and 7 speed models.
