Who do comment trolls hate more than cyclists?

The answer: Lawyers.

Bo Hu was riding or walking his bike along Dougherty Road in Dublin, CA last Tuesday night when the driver of a black 2012 Mercedes-Benz CLS550 hit and killed Hu. The driver fled the scene.

The high impact crash left enough wreckage at the scene that police were able to identify the year, make and model of the vehicle. Police found the heavily damaged vehicle at the home of Spencer Smith in San Ramon, CA and arrested him for felony hit-and-run.

Normally, any story involving cyclists — even when the cyclist is the victim — brings out finger wagging haters and kooks who blame cyclists for all of societies problems. This story has a twist, however: the alleged perpetrator is an attorney. He was driving a brand new Mercedes Benz.

So the newspaper website commenters have directed their anger toward the driver. Here’s my favorite:

As a person who regularly complains about cyclists, I am happy they got this guy and just is swiftly and carried.

  1. I thought the title was rhetorical, and the answer was going to be “no one.”

BTW, “able to modify the year, make and model of the vehicle.” Modify is not the word you are looking for.

  2. I noticed it too.  I expected the usual complaints about cyclists riding at night with no lights, riding on busy streets, riding the wrong way, running red lights, etc.  Even in a hit-and-run some people will have sympathy for the driver, like the case in Berkeley on Tunnel Drive.

That is, until the driver turns out to be someone despicable, like a drug addict with a warrant out for his arrest or a lawyer.

  3. I’m afraid a precedent has been set.  Didn’t the lawyer in Colorado a couple years ago, claim that the “new car smell” caused him to leave the scene of an accident?  Maybe he wasn’t a lawyer, but I think the judge bought his story  Although I don’t recall if the cyclist was killed.  M

    I bet he walks.
