Charlotte, NC Mayor Anthony Foxx has reportedly been selected to be President Obama’s nomination for Secretary of the US Department of Transportation.
The mayor has long been on the short list of potential candidates ever since the current head of the DOT, Ray LaHood, announced his resignation. Although Foxx is short on experience beyond the municipal level, some smart growth and alternative transportation advocates are excited about Foxx, who extended a light rail line and brought in a streetcar to promote denser urban development. Foxx also championed highway extension and widening projects around his city.
The official announcement will happen Monday. Senate confirmation is required before Foxx can begin his duties.
