Neel Kashkari rides a bicycle

Neel Kashkari, the moderate Republican who announced that he’s running for California governor, is apparently an avid cyclist.

From Laura Blumenfeld’s profile of the man who oversaw the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) in 2008 and 2009:

Now, after six months of dieting and 45-mile alpine bike rides, the gym scale under Kashkari’s sneakers reads: 181.2.

He had disbursed more than $400 billion, invested in 540 banks, implemented a $50 billion foreclosure prevention plan. He made People magazine’s “Sexiest Men Alive” issue. And he also made mistakes — a punitive interest rate on the American International Group intervention, he says, and a clause allowing unilateral changes to the Capital Purchase Program contracts — decisions executed quickly in the crisis and recognized belatedly by him on the road to Lake Tahoe, while biking up a 9 percent grade, his thoughts grinding round.

Griffin surprises path cyclist; film at 11

I was just riding along the Guadalupe River Trail in San Jose CA this morning when, silent as death, a monstrous hawk swooped directly in front of me, dropped into the grass next to me, then lifted off with something furry and bloody in its talons.

Elsewhere on the path this morning, I encountered a guy driving his gasoline scooter (the Vespa kind, not a Razr with a 2 stroke putter) on the path. I assumed this is illegal, but such things are regulated at the local level in California and I find no San Jose municipal code restricting powered cycles from city trails. Does anybody know differently?

Unfortunately, no running video camera for me this morning, so instead of dramatic nature footage, say hello to Greg, who returned to work this morning after spending the holidays with his family in Wisconsin. More bike news from the weekend below.

Sharing the road with horses

I hope you all had a great New Year.

While riding on New Years Day, I encountered a group of equestrians who celebrated the Year of the Horse with a horseback ride on public roads. Their route included the most heavily traveled stroad in my city. Orange County cycling attorney David Huntsman points out that this is “something to be encouraged. The brave presence of equestrians is legal and a clue to motorists that the road is not theirs.”

よいお年を

Happy last Monday of 2013.

I left my wallet at home this morning and the cafeteria is closed until after the New Year, so I’m digging for nourishment and change in my office. So far I’ve found nearly two dollars in pennies and nickels, two packs of gum, an unopened bag of cough drops, stale Frito chips, and a bag of dried mixed fruit. We also have free coffee and sugary drinks in the break room so I believe that should be sufficient to sustain me through the day.

Watch for bike related stuff below my socks du jour: Sock Guy Bacon socks.
